Language is the most important means in communication between people with different culture, thus, learning languages makes it possible for us to make communication more effective..
Due to globalization, the world has become more interested in learning foreign languages, to be used in any sorts of communication. In order to effectively understand foreign languages, language students should learn the alphabet or other writing system and its sounds. Thus, alphabet translation or phonetic transcription is important to enable a person to extract precise meanings and pronunciations from a dictionary, a native speaker and bilingual people. Thus, without proper knowledge and information about the language, language students may become victims of embarrassment and confusion.
For students who have mastered phonetic transcriptions, this can help improve their knowledge in spellings, and pronunciation skills. However, most often, people are surprised of how the phonetic transcription seems to not always match to the pronunciation of a particular word. But this does not necessarily mean that the phonetic transcription is not correct.
It is true that learners of foreign languages nowadays have a lot more accessible opportunities of hearing the language spoken not just from their language teachers or from native speaker friends but also from televisions, internet, and CD’s. However, having exposure to these language materials may somehow improve the language learning ability of a person, but it is not sufficient to further understand the correct and proper pronunciation skills.
Through phonetic transcription, the accurate translation of the sounds of the new language into the symbols of one's own language, everyone can receive high quality information about proper pronunciation in a given language, and thus, great knowledge about languages, both in grammar and its pronunciation. Thus, every language student should learn the correct pronunciation and spellings of the vocabulary in a language.
Languages change over time. They may change through their writing system and educational system. Some words may change their pronunciation, some words may used in a different way and some others are coined. However, it is still necessary to learn languages properly in order to understand the whole context and vocabulary of a language.
Another good choice in order to enhance the knowledge of language students is through participating in communication with the native speakers of the language required. But having an accurate phonetic transcription or translation would be still appropriate and sufficient to language learner students to get wider knowledge and scope of effective communication.
Therefore, phonetic transcription is important whether to enhance someone’s writing skills or pronunciation status. Without this essential information, language learner risks being misled to poor grammar or worse, to be an unprofessional linguist.
