Does the mere thought of speaking on a public platform give you jitters? Even if you have good leadership qualities, lacking in the ability to be a good speaker can limit your growth as a well-rounded leader. It is essential to address a crowd of listeners in order to voice your opinion as a leader. If you feel nervous every time you are required to speak, refer to the following pointers to gain confidence in public speaking:

You need to have an understanding of your audience

You should have a clear idea of the kind of audience you would be speaking for. Find out if your audience largely consists of friends, colleagues, or any other group. You are expected to entertain when you are addressing your friends. When you are speaking to your colleagues or a group of students, they possibly look forward to learning new things from you. Do your research and make your speech according to the kind of audience you have.

Always tell yourself you are too good

Negative thinking will not take you anywhere. You have to have a firm belief in yourself and your potential. Visualize yourself as a good speaker who takes the whole auditorium by storm every time he speaks. Avoid negative thoughts of failure. Continuously thinking that you would not succeed would probably make you fail. Instead, concentrate on preparing your speech and the way in which you would want to deliver it. Positive thoughts give birth to positive results. Therefore, follow the simple mantra – think positive.

Look at your audience while speaking

They say that eyes don't lie. It stands true as far as public speaking is concerned. People who are nervous tend to look away rather than face their audience. Some people even look at the floor or keep staring at their notes. Not taking eyes off your notes would probably give the signal that you are not properly prepared for the speech. One golden rule of public speaking therefore, is to look at your audience to gain their trust. It would make you look more confident, ready and in command of the situation. Audiences look forward to speakers who look confident.

Just relax – learn to take it easy

It is true that delivering a speech is an important affair. But at the same time also remember that it is just a speech, and your life does not depend on it. Although it is natural to feel nervous if you forget a line or do not end up articulating a certain portion the way you wanted to, do not feel bogged down by these petty errors. Your audience would not even know if you have skipped a word or two. It is important to relax when you are speaking at the podium, as people tend to connect better with speakers who look calm, composed and relaxed. As soon as you are at ease, you immediately strike a chord with the audience. See, half your job is already done!

Set your pace properly

one of the most important rules of effective speaking is to go slow with your words. Pronounce each word slowly and with care so that your ideas are properly conveyed to your audience. Do not hurry.

The above-mentioned points are an outline on the characteristics of a good public speaker. You can read books such as “How to be a Public Speaking Superstar” by Ravinder Tulsiani to know more about the subject.
