I think we are all leaders in some parts of our lives. Some people are just born with more of a natural leadership ability.
Let's take a look at some of the characteristics of a good leader.
- A good leader has position and values. This is their foundation. Real influence must be developed upon that foundation.
- They have a vision.
- They have goals
- They like to see progress and push boundaries.
- They are kind and treat people with respect and are always available.
- They know when something is happening, or changing and when trouble or opportunity is coming.
- A good leader is enthusiastic. When the team is enthusiastic they are also energized. At this point the team can succeed at almost anything.
- They are positive models. Being a positive model you are going to get a positive response. That's just natural. Negative model - negative response.
- They are good listeners.
Leaders can hinder progress just as easily as they can help create it, therefore they must know their own strengths and skills and weaknesses. They need to be aware of their current state of mind.
Vision
A good leader has a vision. Visions is the key that keeps everyone focused. A great leader can even see years or decades ahead.
They want to make improvements and they desire to find a better way. A primary responsibility of a successful leader is to identify potential leaders. This is not easy, but it is critical.
Successful leaders recognize that personal growth and development of leadership skills are lifetime pursuits. They are open to new ideas and making changes, inventing new procedures, and constantly asking, "Why do we do it this way?" and saying , "Let's try this."
What leaders do, potential leaders around them will do. The people around you are only going to go as far as you go. If your growth stops your ability to lead will stop along with it.
To fulfill a big vision you need to make sure your team clearly sees your vision. Each person on the team is an individual. An individual who has their own style. An effective leader will conform their leadership style to each individual and what their needs are. They are not expecting the team to adapt to them. Remember, nobody can accomplish great things alone. Success is shared with the team.
Positive attitude influences the team.
Attitude is extremely important. It can make all the difference in the world. Take two people with the same skills and abilities and you can end up with two totally different outcomes. The difference maker is attitude.
Begin learning and growing today and watch those around you begin to grow. Always be willing to learn from others. I really believe that everyone we meet has the potential to teach us something. Look for the good in people and not the bad. If you're not already mentoring others get started today.
You can be the one that makes a difference in someones life.
