Prepare To Perform

One thing I have learned when it comes to performance is that there should always be some sort of preparation beforehand. When you are prepared you perform better. If I wanted to participate in a race with my shoes untied, well, I wouldn't perform very well because I wasn't properly prepared to run.

In a bit of scripture I just read in Acts 12, Peter found himself in a similar situation. Peter had been arrested by King Herod. Herod didn't really like what was going on with Christianity spreading so he harassed some of the church. He killed James and when he saw that it pleased some people he threw Peter into prison.

So here is Peter, behind bars, bound by two chains surrounded by soldiers. The bible says while in prison, the church prayed for Peter constantly. All of a sudden one night when Peter was sleeping an angel appeared, struck Peter on the side and told him to "arise quickly!" Instantly Peter's chains had broken and fell to the ground.

Acts 12:8 says: Then the angel said to him, "Gird yourself and tie your sandals"; and so Peter did. And the angel said to him, "Put on your garment and follow me."

I looked up the definition of gird and it showed three definitions:

1. To encircle/ fasten or secure

2. To equip or endow

3. To prepare (oneself) for action

I believe the angel was telling Peter not only to secure his clothing and sandals but to prepare for action! God wanted Peter to get prepared so he could continue to follow Him and do His will. If Peter hadn't of girded himself properly and tied his sandals he probably would've stumbled. He might not have been able to run and might have caused a lot of noise and could've been caught by the prison guards.

Like Peter, God calls us to prepare to act and follow him. He equips us and empowers us to work out His will. When God is calling us out to do His will there will always be a degree of responsibility to prepare ourselves for action, to prepare for battle.

The Lord will always provide a way for us to break through the things that may be holding us back. He will always equip us for the calling He has put on our lives.

We might not ever be in a situation like Peter was in where we get the chance to break out of prison...but we do have oppurtunities everyday where we can prepare ourselves to do God's will. Reading the word and praying are just two simple examples of how we can prepare ourselves. To be prepared for harships and trials that come our way we need the wisdom and knowledge that the bible has to offer.

We also have a responsibility to know our identity and our God-given authority. There are people out there who need to hear the message of God. People who are lost who are waiting to see if this thing we call faith is real!

Don't waste time! God wants us to act on our behalf but most of the time he's waiting for us to act so he can intervene. He wants us to have faith. Look for that open door to move. God gave Peter a chance to escape from his chains that were holding him back. We need to keep our eyes open and be in tune with God so we can see when he's opening a door for us. Arise quickly and follow Him.
