Many people like to state the different between being a manager and being a leader, and the "manager" side almost always loses. That's because many people are so tired of the typical image that goes with being a manager--controlling, a micromanager, out of touch, too interested in jumping on the bandwagon, does not think of the rest of the team, and so on. Leaders get all the praise because leadership is a different thing all together. It is seen as much more inclusive, having a clear vision, working with employees, rather than against them, and are interested in improvements and innovation rather than in maintaining the status quo. Leadership abilities are very much in demand these days, so it would be a good idea for you to hone them if you are considering taking on a higher position in the future. Here are some tips to keep in mind.

1. Have a vision. You need to know where you intend to steer the rest of your team and the company. This helps you map out a good strategic plan, one that will allow you to meet your goals and sidestep any difficulties along the way.

2. Have high expectations for your team. It's often said that nobody rises to low expectations, and if you want your team to succeed, you have to set high expectations for them. Of course, you need to communicate to them the team's goals and what you want them to achieve, as well as the results that you expect. Otherwise, people won't know exactly what they are working towards.

3. Be able to communicate. Whether you are telling people your expectations, your feedback on their work, or sharing ideas, communication is a great tool in building your relationship with your team. This also means being open with them when it comes to any possible changes that may take place in the company. Keeping them in the loop shows that you appreciate their role and contribution in the company, and that you think that they're important enough to know what's going on.

4. Embrace change. There are some strategies and tactics that you should retain, but there are also some new ideas and approaches that you might want to adopt--and they might end up working better than the old ones ever did. You need to be flexible and to explore different avenues to be able to spark innovation and encourage people to be more creative and open to new ideas.

Leadership can be honed in different ways, from taking a leadership development course to undergoing coaching to learning from your mentors. The important thing to remember is for you to constantly keep your team on top of your priorities. Keep in mind that the team's direction and their output rely on your guidance. Leadership isn't all about you being and staying at the top, but about you guiding your team to success and keeping them ahead of everyone else.
