When you move countries doing things like tax and also anything that involves a solicitor or lawyer can be tricky. In this article I want to outline some of the easiest ways that you can move around these obstacles with the minimum effort.
Okay so you live in another country like Switzerland – and if you are reading this then it is probably safe to say that you speak English and it is probably your first language.
So if you are living in Switzerland and you need to find someone like a lawyer or solicitor to do your tax then there are a few ways to go about it.
1. You can search online for an English speaking lawyer or solicitor in the town where you are living to help you, but more than often your search may come up empty unless this person had advertised their services online.
2. The next thing you could do is to approach you local foreign English speaking community and ask them who they use. Many cities all over the world often have something like a mixer night or even a Chamber of commerce who could help you with these things
3. The third thing that you could do to help you find an English speaking lawyer or solicitor is to ask your embassy or consulate for advice, more often than not they will be able to point you in the right direction and you should be able to find someone to help you.
4. If you have a friend that you trust that is from the country that you are in or that can speak the language than you may be able to go to a local lawyer. However there may be a few problems with this especially if you need help with a problem that involves foreign law.
In Switzerland there are many lawyers that will speak a few different languages or even be specialized in foreign or international law. Many of the international lawyers in Geneva Switzerland often speak two or more languages.
Basically it all comes down to how difficult your problem is and the reason why you need a solicitor. It is often much easier to discuss and work out how to solve whatever it is that you are having trouble with if you can speak in a language that you are comfortable in.
Finally – the last thing you could do is learn how to speak the language! Good Luck.
Nicely done. You do indeed need an attorney in these circumstances. Life's kind of complicated all around, so advice from a solicitor familiar with your rights and responsibilities makes a difference. Good article.
