Hi Colin - good news! I have your money and will bring it up to you this evening with a bottle of champagne to celebrate. I had been waiting anxiously for months to hear these words and on hearing them breathed a big sigh of relief, my problems were over.

My problems started in January 2009 when I lent various sums of money to what I thought was my best friend Ozay (aka Jimmy) in Kemer, Antalya,Turkey where I live. At first he repaid the money that he borrowed without any problem. It was after he had told me that he and his Russian wife were getting divorced and that he had a €1,200,000 settlement coming that things started to go downhill. I was shocked when he told me the size of his settlement. However, as I had been with him several times when he had deposited large amounts of dollar bills in his bank I believed when he told me that there was €2.3 million in there joint bank account.

In March Jimmy asked to borrow €30,000 as a deposit to buy another house as his wife was getting their house as part of her settlement. He showed me a bank book that had $122,000 in his account. When I asked why he did not draw some of this money out, he said that until his divorce was finalised all his bank accounts were frozen. After my agreeing to lend him this money, Jimmy wrote me out a cheque for €30,000.

After the sudden death of my wife I had major problems in having her car transferred into my name, so when I bought an old American Chevrolet, I registered it in Jimmy’s name instead of my own. As a safe guard Jimmy gave me a signed cheque as a guarantee against any problems related to my putting the car into his name.

When in May I asked Jimmy about my €30,000, he said that due to his wife being Russian all the paperwork had to be translated into Russian, which was causing delays in his receiving his settlement money. Due to the delay in repayment he said he would give me an extra €5,000 when he received his money.

During May and June I was in and out of Turkey and also busy arranging a three month trip around the world starting in October. I was not unduly worried about Jimmy repaying my money, as I trusted him and also had his signed cheques.

However by the beginning of August I had doubts as to if Jimmy was ever going to receive his settlement money and repay me. So when he called in early August to say that he was bringing my money and a bottle of champagne to celebrate, I was extremely happy. But Jimmy did not bring the money or answer my many phone calls that night.

After that things just got worse. Jimmy called me several times over the next few months saying that he had received his settlement money, and was transferring the money he owed me into my bank account. Unfortunately this did not happen.

In August, Jimmy proposed marriage to his girlfriend Anna, who accepted his proposal. By then I had paid for my trip around the world, however, due to Jimmy not repaying my money I had to cancel my trip. When I told Jimmy that thanks to him I had lost over £1,000 in cancellation fees, he told me he could use his air miles and get me tickets for nothing. A few days later he told me that he had booked my flights. On enquiring at the local travel agent the clerk confirmed that my flights had been booked. He also told me that Jimmy had told him that I would be paying for them.

In October Jimmy told me that his ex father in-law had agreed to pay off all his debts providing he returned to his wife who was then living in Russia. Two weeks later he told me that in the evening he was going to collect money from his ex father–in-laws accountant, to cover what he owed both me and his staff. Unfortunately, like all his other promises this never happened.

By now I did not think that I would ever get back my money from Jimmy, so decided to get my Chevy put into my name. When I asked Jimmy to transfer the Chevy into my name, he said he was very busy. Then I found out that there was a charge on my car, which had to be paid before Jimmy could transfer the car into my name. Unfortunately, he never did with more charges added against it. Unfortunately, as the car is registered in his name I have no claim to it.

In early October, Jimmy called to say that his settlement money was at last in his bank account, and to meet him at his bank at 10am the following morning. Along with a friend, we went to the bank. When Jimmy did not show up, we spoke to the bank manager who informed us that Jimmy had no money in the bank.

Shortly after this, I met Jimmy who told me that he had no money, and that he had major money problems. On asking about his divorce settlement money, he told me that he thought his ex father-in-law was causing it to be delayed.

In mid December, I received a SMS from Jimmy’s fiancée saying that a friend had informed her that Jimmy was still married. This was terrible news for her as she was expecting Jimmy’s baby. I could not believe this news, so I sent a SMS to Jimmy’s wife. She replied that she and Jimmy were still married. She later sent me an email in which she informed me that Jimmy had cheated her father out of a very large sum of money.

This was shocking news as it meant that Jimmy had lied to me from the start. He had just used our friendship and my stupidity to obtain money from me, which he had no intention of repaying. Due to my trusting what I thought was my best friend, I have lost all my money and my car.

The cheques Jimmy gave me were company cheques, which are worthless, as there is nothing in the account. My lawyer has informed me that there is virtually no chance of my getting back any of the money I lent Jimmy or my car. He also informed me that under Turkish law, cheques are only valid for 10 days from the date on them.

Since this I have been informed that Jimmy owes money to numerous people including his ex fiancée. In view of my experience, if you should happen to meet a charming young man named Ozay (Jimmy) while in Turkey, do not under any circumstances lend him any money.
