To be an agent for a life insurance company, you must first be familiar with a life insurance agents job descriptions and qualifications. You may think that selling life insurance is as easy as a walk in the park, because hey, everybody needs a life insurance these days. No one will turn you down if you press the right buttons. While that may be true, always keep in mind that you are not the only life insurance agent in your area. You have a lot of competition who are waiting to sell their pitch.
To stand out from a sea of hungry life insurance agents, you have to be able to let the potential costumer see something different in you than your competitors. Something that will make them remember you when they have finally made a decision to purchase. So what does it mean to be a life insurance agent? What exactly does an agent do? Is it only to sell life insurance?
Basically an insurance agent sells life, property, casualty, health, automotive, and/or other types of insurance. They may refer clients to independent brokers, may also work as an independent broker, or may be hired as a broker for a certain insurance company.
The task of an insurance agent is quite simple. You are to attend meetings, seminars, and programs to learn about new products and services, learn new skills, and receive technical assistance in developing new accounts. Calculating premiums and establish payment methods are also your task. Call on policy holders to deliver and explain policy, analyze insurance programs, and suggest additions or charges, or to change beneficiaries. You will also confer to clients to obtain and provide information when claims are made on a policy. Customize insurance programs to suit individual costumers, often covering a variety of risks. Developing marketing strategies to compete with other agents or companies who sell insurance. Ensuring that policy requirements are fulfilled, including any necessary medical examinations and the completion of appropriate forms. You will also be explaining features, advantages, and disadvantages of various policies to promote sale of insurance plans.
Do you have to be a bachelor holder to be able to be an agent? Sometimes, but mostly, high school diploma is okay. However, you will need a state license, continuing education and training will be necessary. Taking classes in economics, business, or finance will put you ahead of others who are also applying for the job. You also want to take up course that will help you read and understand people better such a psychology.
These things I have stated above are not only limited to a life insurance agent’s job description but it is also applicable for other fields of the insurance business. Every job is different.
