Choosing the Right Outdoor Wall Lighting for Your Space

Perhaps one of the most distinguishing aspects of a modern home is great outdoor wall lighting. Not only does it make the home more inviting for guests and visitors arriving and departing, it can turn a dark outdoor space into a well-lit, stylish one no matter the time of day. In addition, it adds security and and visibility, ensuring peace of mind after dark.

If you're looking to add or upgrade your outdoor wall lighting, like any other wall sconce or wall light in your home, there's a few things you'll likely want to keep in mind to make sure your lighting showcases your home in the best possible way. Of course, you'll want to make sure you do enough research so that you feel confident in your choice, but here's a few quick outdoor wall lighting tips to get you started:

1. What's your budget?

Write it down on paper, and then don't change that number unless you're absolutely willing to spend more! Even before you start looking for outdoor wall lighting online, know exactly what fits your budget, and what just won't fit. It may seem obvious - or even boring - but it will save you from regretting your purchase in the end. Fortunately, you need not spend hundreds of dollars to find simple outdoor wall lighting as some brands offer quality outdoor wall lighting fixtures for under $100.

2 .Where will these lights be placed?

Are you looking to illuminate a small outdoor patio, or do you need a set of outdoor wall lighting fixtures along the front or side of your house? If you need to light a smaller area, you may be able to use just one or two light fixtures. However, if you're looking to light larger areas or ones that require more light for outdoor activities (such as a pergola, dining patio area, or other well-used outdoor location), you'll want fixtures that give off more light, and may even need more fixtures in general to light things properly.

3. What will these lights look like during the day?

At night, it's harder to tell what the outdoor lighting fixture itself actually looks like - but once daytime comes around, your outdoor wall lighting becomes a novel part of your home's design and outside decor. Do you have a larger, modern home where modern outdoor wall lighting fixtures would complement the exterior? Is your house more modest, where traditional or contemporary lighting fixtures - anything that's not plastic - will look fine? Or are you looking to infuse your lighting with some stylish charm with a rustic outdoor wall lighting fixture? These small considerations can have a subtle effect on the home's look & feel, both for you and your guests.

4. How durable/protected to these lights need to be?

Have your eye on a beautiful glass outdoor wall lighting fixture but live in a place where dust, wind, or rain are part of your outdoor vocabulary? You may want to consider a more enclosed outdoor lighting fixture. The good news is that there's a scale to help you figure out how waterproof/dustproof a given outdoor lighting fixture is. This rating is call an "IP Code", which stands for "Ingress Protection", and is essentially a rating of how protected the wall light is from external elements like rain and dust. There's separate scales for both dust and water, but for rain protection, you'll probably want a water rating of at least 3-4 on the scale.

5. How energy efficient should these outdoor wall lights be?

Generally, outdoor wall lighting is kept on for hours, if not all night long. This significant use of electricity can add up to a lot of money spent over time - unless you select Energy Star rated fixtures! Generally, these come in fluorescent, halogen, and LED bulb types; LED outdoor wall lighting can be more expensive but will last longer; halogen provides energy efficiency and a lower cost. Additionally, considering whether lower wattage bulbs will suffice instead of higher ones can provide more energy savings.

6. Do these lights need to be in compliance?

While this won't always be a consideration, some locales and areas have "turtle codes" that prevent use of light fixtures that have too much glare or light in certain diretions. For most outdoor wall lighting fixtures, this shouldn't be too big of an issue as many lights have top shades which prevent most of the light from returning upward. But it never hurts to check your local regulations and ordinances to make sure you don't purchase the wrong outdoor wall lighting fixtures.

Hopefully, these simple tips will come in handy when selecting your next outdoor wall lighting fixture and help you make the right purchase - the first time around. The good news is that, regardless of the type of wall light you're looking for, there's plenty of places that offer a great variety of outdoor wall lighting fixtures. By spending just a bit of time and consideration for your outdoor lighting, you'll be able to transform your outdoor space into a beautiful, stylish, functional one for you and your guests alike to enjoy both day and night.
