List Building Guide – What’s Going on When You Build A List?

Here’s your tiniest list building guide! I’m writing to guide you through the tiniest piece of what’s going on when you build your list.

Knowing what’s going on matters. When you know what’s going on, you can do what you need to do to get your own piece of what’s going on.

Let’s focus on two things: action and attention.

What’s going on?

(1) Action

Sometimes you get included when a person goes online – you get discovered. Going from discovering you to visiting you required action asking for more about you.

For example:

(a) Someone types something into a search engine.

(b) Results pop up.

(c) Getting from those search results to you requires some kind of action.

Yes, “Click!”

Maybe among search results is an article you published on Street Articles. Or perhaps it’s another article from Street Articles, linking to yours.

One simple mouse click! That’s all it takes.

You’ve got an action taking person. That’s how your visitor got to you.

Look at what’s going on. You’re being found by a person who’s taking some kind of action.

That gives you a first known characteristic of your visitor. You’ve got a person who is in the mode of taking action.

That’s a valuable thing to know. When you know someone is already taking action?

You can tell them what to do. You can tell them where to go.

(2) Attention

You’ve got to grab your visitor’s attention.

When people are online, they judge fast. Stay or go.

That back button gets lots of usage!

In fact, studies show you get 3 seconds or that’s it. You blew it!

One quick motion! Back to whatever made your newest visitor suspect they might want to know more about you. They go with a verdict: “Nope!”

Click! Now, they’re gone. Probably gone forever!

What does that mean for you? It means you’ve got the role of grabbing attention.

Now, that would be really tough if you were trying to grab just anyone’s attention. But you’re not!

You want to catch the attention of your qualified visitors. Folks who have the kind of problems you solve.

You’ve got an area of expertise your qualified visitors need. You’ve got solutions to problems they have.

You've got to do whatever it takes. You can’t care how anyone reacts unless they’re a qualified visitor.

It's more than content. Your look and feel and content must grab your qualified visitor’s attention.

You must grab attention in a way that instantly feels like a recognition that, “Oh. Okay, I guess I’m in the right place!” because that's simply part of what's going on when you build your list.

Yes Cynthia a good article and I agree whole heartedly, however if every click and grab was so good, the results would ensure thousands of readers. What concerns me is when searching for a grabbing title using the available suggested titles sites, they do not always appear to be what I would use, or planned to use. Now this allows me the thought that we all search for solutions using different key words, and it is this that I have difficulty with. What is the searcher looking for and what keyword is he using. Some keywords give the result of hundreds of thousands of hits per month, it is that competition that one fights against, getting the site in the top few pages, before someone gets bored and moves on. I am aware that there are millions if not hundreds of millions of people on the net every day, how to get them all to look at your site, impossible. I still maintain that someone might find one site more grabbing than another, we not all being the same, it is this that keeps so many on the net, the individualism of mankind being the fact. Don't know how you will agree with my outpouring, but I have put this question to the company busy with my program as to how the website should be structured. It is the differing searchers and how they search that concerns me. Impossible to predict the individualism of people. Agree or not?

Rob, First off - thanks for your comment! Yes, some things get lots of readers. Suggested titles are simply starting points. Use your own imagination! Let who you are leak into your title. Keywords are indeed important. Keywords show you how people are using the Internet. For example, many thousands of people type in A B C. Let's say you and I type in X Y Z with no overlapping words. 1. there may be no interest in A B C by you or me! 2. X Y Z may not catch the other group 3. 1% of the group may use X Y Z for their next search There's lots of facts! There's lots of statistics. Many ways of doing each thing. Bottom line is you cannot respond to the whole world anyway! What search engines are doing is providing a service to the people looking. The intent is helping people pull their own needle out of the Internet Haystack. Search engines (and others) provide evidence of how that happened. Closer to home? If you saw a giraffe-sized indentation on a lion's head you may wonder if it got kicked by a lion. Search engines might help you find a picture and story of when that lion got kicked and by what giraffe. blessings, Cynthia P.S. Yep, you wouldn't be standing there using the Internet:-)
