For a lot of people, the idea of creating a list is hard enough and they, in my humble opinion, leave a large amount of money on the table, after they have already done all the work. To explain this a little better, I should clarify the issue of list building. For most businesses, it is about adding new clients to your list to ensure an ongoing marketing base for your products and services.
However, it is better to think of your clients as a loyal group of subscribers interested in your service. Hence, by treating them as individuals and always wanting to offer the best products to them, not from the point of view of sales, but rather from the point of view of helping them solve their problems, you will find their loyalty will grow with time. Mix that with the best quality possible and you've got a golden egg, so to speak.
Seriously, it is amazing how many people just tell members of their list to buy the latest widget and they do this in every email! It may well work for a while, but I like to mix my emails. Some emails may be purely informational, and others will be informational, mixed with a promotion. I educate my list members, by telling them in advance I will be doing this, so they expect it.
Having said all this, when you have gotten a sign up, you can use a technique called the 'One Time Offer'. A point to note is to actually call it an 'Order customization', as this will seem a little less like a 'sales job'. Seriously, as long as your customized offer is relevant to the original purchase and is not an absolute requirement for the original purchase to work, that is fine. If they have to have the new item on top of the original offer than you have committed what I believe to be deception, or even unethical conduct. However, if it is a complimentary bonus, then you have actually created an up-sell that may well be bought, given the buyer is in a buying mood. This can be used when you have an opt in form as part of the purchasing process, or as an opt-in when a sign up is made. It is really up to you.
My main point that I want to make is that you must be ethical. There is a fine line between upgrading a buyer, and purporting something as vital. That is just my two cents on this point. Any mail opt in exercise is going to take perseverance as well as a commitment to always provide value to your list members. Using the customized approach will help you not only gain leads, but also help you convert and move the list opt ins through your sales funnel. It is also beneficial to use exciting video techniques in opt in page videos to help you get your message across.
