Does Postpartum Affect Your Baby?

Does having Postpartum affect your Baby? I often wonder about this question. Seems several people want to know and have asked me. I just read the latest research on this and the common consensus is that, "YES, it does". However, don't go giving up on your self or your kid just yet. Not everything is written in stone!

During the first months, the baby is with you all the time. Mom is stressed, depressed, not "there". But, she IS THERE, if not in spirit, body. This is important. The baby is picking up signals, cues and stress from Mom. But is staying connected to Mom. Even though, Mom is "not present", there is still bonding.

My daughter had colic and cried for nearly 3 months every night from 7 to 9 pm. She was so loud and in so much discomfort, that I literally thought my neighbors would call the cops on me. Maybe this was her reaction to my postpartum? I may never know. But, we journeyed through this ordeal TOGETHER, she stopped crying. I kept on.

Months and even years later, well until my daughter was about 6, she had a very very hard time, being away from me. Is THIS aftermath of postpartum? It could be. She picked up all my anxiety, fear and sadness. We both struggled to "get her out of the car" during carpool of first grade. Could this be the long term affects of my "illness"?

She has had trouble letting go of mom. Sleep overs, play dates, birthday parties and visits away from Mom were painful and trying for us both. Is this postpartum fall out? It could be. But I am loath to dwell on this possibility. I would rather focus on the "good".

My daughter has been close with me and is turning out "fine". She is a sensitive, intelligent gal who loves her mom and dad and has several friends. She is in no "hurry" to grow up. She has sleep overs, play dates and goes to lots of birthday parties and without Mom.

Is it even possible to really KNOW if postpartum has an affect? What baby does not grow up with some difficulty? I'm sure that postpartum affected my daughter, but it does not mean she is DOOMED for life. In fact, I believe it has only made her a better person. She is now prepared for her future and know that if she too has a child and suffers from this malady, that her mother survived and so will she. Apparently Postpartum is "handed" down and she will know what not to do!
