When you are asked which kind of cancer has killed the most people, your natural response would be to blurt out breast cancer. Wrong! Lung cancer is the grand champion, by a mile. Close to 200,000 Americans are diagnosed with lung cancer every year. One of the main causes, although admittedly not by itself and must have other factors involved, is smoking.

This is the reason why the research for the best treatments for lung cancer is one of the biggest scientific endeavors in the world today.

Some traditional treatments for lung cancer would be:

a. Chemotherapy - the most popular treatment of choice. This is done by applying very strong drugs and medication into the body.

b. Surgery - this is only done when the cancer hasn't spread throughout the body and is only at a certain area, preventing metastatis.

c. Radiation - this is used in conjunction with either the surgery or chemotherapy. As the term indicates, this uses very powerful energy rays to kill the cancer cells.

d. Immunotherapy - relatively new to the scientific field. The process includes increasing and stimulating person's immunity system, more specifically, the immune cells to counter the disease through the body's natural antibodies.

Although the above methods are widely believed and accepted by the medical field, a few alternate methods are showing great potential in the ever-continuing search. Here are a few modern alternative approaches to treatments for lung cancer:

a. Controlled Amino Acid Therapy (CAAT) - initiated by the A.P. John Institute for Cancer Research, the process calls for the drastic removal of carbohydrate and protein from the body. Officials from the National Cancer Institute and the University of Chicago have released statements saying they are promoting this new method and they can vouch for its effectiveness. This specifically targets the diet methods of the patient, to avert the growth of more cancerous cells.

b. Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) - This process includes applying a photosentisizer (a phototoxic drug), working together with a light exposure (either a conventional or laser), to focus on the cancerous cells or tumor. Some research institutes such as BC Cancer Research Centre are trying to combine traditional (Immunotherapy) and alternative (PDT) to get a better result than what is commonly accepted.

The search for the perfect treatments for lung cancer is in the hands of doctors. The good thing is they are opening their minds to new methods and ideas of overcoming this deadly disease.
