Master Of the Grill

Grilling can be very intimidating especially when choosing between gas or charcoal. I guess it depends on your preference. Gas grilling is pretty simple just turn on the grill and get going. Charcoal grilling is a little bit more technical. Choosing a charcoal brand and flavor is a task all on its own then there is lighting the grill and keeping it lit. I was a little hesitant but decided to give it a try. My husband and I just purchased a charcoal grill this weekend. We've always had a gas grill but decided we would give charcoal a try since the charcoal briquettes are pretty easy to light and use these days. We went with a simple 20in charcoal grill. We got ours from Home Depot and chose the Aussie Portable Charcoal Grill. It was under $50 and seemed pretty reasonable. Then we chose a hard word charcoal to try first. There are other flavors as well to try.

My husband was taking care of the the grilling part so I went and prepared the meat. This past weekend was Mother's Day and we were having a family cookout. I purchased steak, ground beef for burgers, bratwurst, and boneless skinless chicken breast. I wanted to keep things simple, quick, and easy. I hate spending hours preparing a meal especially since I have a toddler I chase after!

For the chicken I marinaded it the night before. To prepare it I butterflied the breast to make for easier and shorter grilling time and place the chicken in a zip lock bag and poured Kraft Zesty Italian Dressing in the bag.The amount of dressing depends on the amount of chicken. I put it enough in to cover the chicken. Then I closed it, gave it a turn, and placed the bag in a bowl (in case it leaks in the fridge) and stuck it in the fridge.

For the steak and burgers I went super simple with them as well. I always get ground chuck for my burgers. It may be a higher fat content at 80/20 but it always has a lot of flavor and when grilling the fat will cook out. I formed the beef into patties. This time I used a patty former just because I like how neat and uniform they come out. I try to handle the beef as little as possible so it forms a good patty. I seasoned them with McCormick hamburger season blend and Worcestershire sauce. Super yummy flavor. For the steaks I choose a sirloin cut and seasoned them with McCormick Steak season blend. And that's it, super simple. Plus there will be added flavor from the charcoal. By the time I was finished preparing the burgers and steak the grill was ready.

My husband said he had ample grilling time with the charcoal as well and they never went out. Grilling can be intimidating but with easier to light charcoal it has gotten a lot better. And the flavor was delicious! It wasn't over powering and it didn't taste like lighter fluid because the charcoal wouldn't light.
