Does Your Cubicle Seem Like A Stable?

It was fair time in East Texas! Loads of fun was to be had. My boss had some prize cows he wanted to show at the local fair! We were waiting for the neighbor to come by with his stock trailer to take the prize animals to the Hopkins County Fair!

Let me introduce to you a spirited young gelding, Gabe. He was an excitable young mount of about 5 years. He did something spectacular that day that got this ole cowboy to thinking.

The neighbor did show up with his stock trailer and as he pulled around the circle drive and stopped, Gabe rocketed into action. He shuffled back a couple of steps and then cleared the half door that separated him from freedom! My boss and I just stood there with our mouths open! Gabe didn't jump to be free to run, he jumped to be able to welcome the new horse to the ranch!

He was nose to nose with the neighbors horse, Starbuck. It was fun to watch them as they whinnied and motioned to each other about who knows what! The excitement was contagious! I wonder what the two were saying to each other?

"Did you hear about what happened to Agnus?" or some other horse gossip maybe. In any case, it was apparent to all that the two were instant friends!

I turned to look at the other three horses that lived in the same stable and paddock. Two of them were peering out over the half door that Gabe cleared just moments before, as if to give out a big Texas howdy to their visiting neighbor.

However, the other horse was out in the paddock behind the stable. She seemed to be hiding from the newcomer. She didn't want anything to do with the new visitor!

I have to digress here a moment. I didn't realize it then but I witnessed three different personality types.

Let's see how these personalities play out as we visit a nearby office. You know the type. Where there is a maze of cubicles constructed to provide semi-privacy for each employee. Each worker with his/her own desk, computer and chair.

The elevator ding announces the arrival of the newly hired worker. The scene begins to look like a 'Whac-a-Mole' game where you wait for the mole to pop its head up and then whack 'em with a mallet!

The fun begins as there are a select few that will jump right over the 'half door' and introduce themselves to the new hire and even begin to fill them in on all the details of the office! They want to know who you are and where you came from. They are very excited to see you!

The majority of the floor, however, are a little more reserved. They are curious, so they pop up to look. They are more than willing to meet you as you pass by, but don't see the need to go out of their way to meet and greet you.

Then we get to the 'shy' select few. These people hear the elevator ding and stay hunkered down at their station. Not really wanting to be noticed, they continue working as if nothing is going on. They secretly hope that no one comes by to do any meeting and greeting! You might even find them hiding in the restroom!

I could continue this little analogy to speak of office politics and positioning, but the real reason here is to bring to mind the importance of the first introductions of a new hire to his workplace. First impressions are the lasting ones!

Do your employees know the importance of welcoming in the new employee? Helping them to feel welcome is an important first step. Do you as a manager know how to make the introduction process a pleasant experience?

This topic is not something that gets much mention, but the ability to provide a great work environment begins with that first impression! Make it a great one.

Oh and on a final note, if your cubicle begins to feel like a stable, be sure to get out to the paddock once in awhile to mingle with others. It helps to know that others are feeling the same way!

Having been the newbie on several occasions I know the feeling of being welcomed and that of being ignored. I much prefer the first. Liked

Yup! My sentiments exactly! Open up the welcome wagon! Serve up some Howdy and some Hi Ya'll! I think it helps to get the new employee off to a much better start! Thanks for the read and your great input, John!

This is so interesting to me...I just watched a show on H2 at a friends house and they were showing the languages of different animals and how the trainers know them including lions and elephants and more...i enjoyed learning this thanks

Oh you are so welcome! Makes things easier when you speak their language. I am sure that is why my Grandfather had me watch his horses before I could ride! Didn't make sense to me then, but makes all the sense in the world now that I look back. Thanks so much for reading and your input is greatly appreciated!

Having a nice extrovert in the ranks will do wonders. People get shy, and often give off wrong signals. Someone has to break the ice, and defenses will come down. Wish we were more like horses, because then we'd have horse sense. Nicely done.

This is a good article Mac, I agree the first impression can make a team or break a team... players need to mingle and get to know the others... from that comes a winning team...
