Ideas to Reality: It is Darkest Before the Dawn

It's so dark out here as I sit on the porch facing east. It's so quiet and still, I think I can hear my own heart beating. The stars are the only source of any light at all. If I wanted to navigate my way to the front gate, it would be difficult maneuvering around all the obstacles.

It is just before dawn. The best time of day for this ole cowboy!

I have no idea how to deal with how bad the low morale is here at my company. It has gotten to the point that I think I will be losing even my best employees.

As I gaze out towards the east. I think I see just a little bit of light beginning to show itself as the dawn begins. Oh yes, there it is, morning has begun here in the outback of New Mexico.

I may have an idea. I am not sure it will work. Maybe I could implement some sort of awards program.

Dawn begins to be more evident as a beautiful array of light begins to form over the horizon. It's going to be another beautiful sunrise!

I have to research this out further. I wonder what kinds of accomplishments I should be awarding. What should the awards be? How and when shall I award the employees that out shine the others?

The Sun begins to show it face and I look back towards the west, I can see evidence of a new day. The sunlight has made it to the outback of New Mexico!

I can start to what our employees do right. What about the negative? Yes, I still need to track those things but they shouldn't be the focus. I will set up a manager's meeting to discuss this program further. I am beginning to see the benefits of rewards rather than using our current system of threats with punishment.

Now the Sun has reached a little higher in the sky and I can begin to feel the heat blowing on the breeze. I bet it will be 100 degrees today!

It's Monday, and I have called my managers together to gain their input on this new rewards program. The ideas that many have decided to implement are causing a stir throughout the company now. I have noticed improved morale as these actions are taken.

Now the Sun has reached it's highest point in the sky and it is now blazing hot here! I dare not stay out here much longer for fear of heat exhaustion. Wow can it get hot here in New Mexico!

The managers have fully embraced this rewards program. So much so I have already noticed an increase in the company's productivity levels. I am so impressed how a simple change in focus has brought great results.

Just some more musings from an ole cowboy sitting on the porch this morning, watching the Sunrise!

Great article McK! Rewards are a much better incentive than threats for sure! Wish the place I work for would listen to your advice. Threats do not mean much, after a certain point employees no longer really care whether they are punished or not. For example, one of the popular threats for refusing mandatory overtime where I work is to be given a one-day lay off. It has gotten to the point where I am working not only full time but also working these overtime shifts (12-16 hours) almost every other day. I'm thinking I wouldn't mind an extra day off! :P

Once I finish my book, you will have something you can pass along to management. It will be a cowboy's journey through life with his horse and how manager's can learn 'horse language'! Will soon be available on amazon. I'm sure I will write an article or two as the time for publishing draws near. Mac

Great angle McK. I agree that positive rewards are the way to get results. It works at home too. If they keep not leaving the door open to the dryer and burning out the light,I am going to reward them by plugging it back in. :P

Try taking the glasses off and closing the eyes, picture the book signings and money pouring in... now keep the eyes closed a little longer and picture the title and content... now open the eyes put your glasses back on and get writing...

You have me in ah, as I seem to be stuck in the city for the forseeable future, not for ever just for now, the sunset I close my eyes and I can see myself there, reaching for my sunglasses as the sun cllimbs higher in the sky. It is funny when inspiration hits, times like this give us time to reflect.....complete silence, at one with the start of the day...... nice article McK
