Roy Rogers never went to the doctor when he was sick. Nope. He would visit his local veterinarian. Do you think that's weird? I don't think so.
Here's why it's not so unthinkable: People can tell you face to face what is happening to them, how they feel, where the pain is, while animals don't have a voice in the matter.
Doctors have to listen to you tell them about their ailments and then he begins searching for the clues that leads to diagnosis and treatment.
Veterinarians, on the other hand, have patients that cannot tell them anything. Well not with the spoken word, anyway. Animals do tell their Vet what is wrong, but in a different way. They show up with their symptoms, and the Vet is left to diagnose them without the 'help' of his patient.
Now let's take the workplace relationships into account here and see if there are any Doctors and/or Veterinarians in the house.
Is there a Doctor in the house? This poor, sick employee over here needs a good doctor! Let's ask him what his symptoms are.
"I am so so tired all the time", the patient complains.
Doc replies, "It can't be all that bad, let's take a look, Open wide!" Doc takes his pulse, listens to him breathe, and even takes a look at his tonsils. All systems look good from where I am sitting.
Translation: sick employee comes to work on time and gets his work done promptly. So what's the problem? All is well, right?
Enter the Veterinarian. He doesn't ask any questions, because he can see how the sick employee has changed his disposition over the past couple of weeks. He still comes to work on-time and does his work, however, he doesn't smile anymore or interact with the others on his team.
The Veterinarian hasn't notice any bad interactions here at work, but can't completely rule out that he might be getting beat up by his herdmates. The Vet thinks that possibly there could be something going on at home that could be the issue. When asked, the sick patient reveals that he has separated from his wife, and yes that has impacted him greatly.
Do you see a difference here? The Doctor doesn't see that there is anything wrong. If fact, when the doctor asks the patient what is wrong, he gets back that he is just tired. More is going on than that! It takes the eyes and ears of a Veterinarian to come to the proper diagnosis.
Roy Rogers had it right when he said that Veterinarians make better Doctors! I think that leaders in the workplace need to take a page from a Roy Rogers and watch for and act on issues before they get out of hand.
I had a great Vet when I was young! Never did use 'em like a Doc, but now lookin' back, would have been the way to go! Never heard of Joel Wallach, DVM, but I have heard of Dead Doctors Don't Lie! Mmmm must be getting on in me ole age! Thanks for the compliment.
And if the patient asks for a second opinion, grab the cat and the Lab. Instant Cat Scan and Lab test. I agree that many doctors don't take the time to really diagnose the patient. In fact, that is what the PA is for these days. The doctor is too busy keeping the HMO's happy. 15 minute visit. Then on to the next. and the next and the next. They don't have time for a real diagnosis or the HMO takes them to the cleaners.
Not high on Physicians Assistants either! At least, the ones I have seen. If I am going to see a doctor, shouldn't I get what I am paying for? Not so much anymore! I'm with Roy, give me a good Vet! LOL Thanks for the input.
Coming from a farming background I agree. Thanks for sharing
I must say, I never would have thunk it! I enjoy writing! May even make it my new career, who knows!
Another outstanding article.. I agree vets do have a better understanding of physical symptoms.. how often do we go to a Doctor nd he asks how he can help, we answer we think we have flu and give him those symptoms and he promptly subscribes a flu cure, in the mean time it might be the begin stages of Malaria which show very similar symptoms to flu in the early stage, yet requires a blood test to diagnose it... what would a vet do? probably take blood in the first place and cure the Malaria in its early stage... great article written in a style I really enjoy...
Thanks again! You sure do get around! See your comments on websites, too! That's great! Yeah, I had a thyroid problem that went misdiagnosed for years. Finally changed doctors, and at the new doctor's office got waylaid by the nurse. She asked if I had been taking my thyroid medicince! LOL I said I didn't know I had a thyroid problem! Sure enough, the previous doctor said I was just feeeling depressed because of too much stress (What? He thinks me having 9 kids is stressful? LOL) Onto thyroid pills and yippee I am good as new! LOL Awe there you go again, getting me all riled up into another dang article! You're good for my creativity! LOL Keep it up!
Glad to be of service Mac, keep on popping them out and you'll be taking over from me at number one...
