The Revolution Has Already Begun, Mr Trump

I just read an article stating that Donald Trump has called for a revolution against President Obama. My reaction is, “What a ridiculous thought, and Mr. Trump continues to give a bad name to white men in the U.S.”

President Obama has been re-elected to a second term by 52% of the popular vote and 303 Electoral College votes. His winnings included New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania; states which, presumably, are stomping grounds for Mr. Trump when he is in the country.

The revolution has already begun.

To be clear, President Obama was neither elected nor re-elected by the votes of only people of color (racial and ethnic minorities). After adjusting for the reality that every U.S. citizen did not vote in Tuesday’s election, President Obama won with the support of a significant percentage of white men.

Despite the divisiveness along racial, ethnic and socioeconomic lines fostered during the 18-month national campaign, the American people came together in the end at the rate of 52% to re-elect the nation’s first African American President. Cross-cultural acceptance and inclusiveness was in full bloom last night. The evidence continues to suggest that there is only a minority of individuals in the U.S., albeit with extraordinary money and influence, who promulgate divisive attitudes.

“Diversity” means differences. People can be different in terms of personality, characteristics, talent, experiences, culture, and perspectives. I favor an inclusive definition of diversity, and I suspect that many of the people who voted to re-elect President Obama also favor an inclusive definition of diversity. Nonetheless, with a focus on race and ethnicity, the data below undergirds the Presidential election results and demonstrates that it is becoming increasingly difficult for people with attitudes like Mr. Trump to thrive:

Group 1990 2011

Total U.S. Population 248,709,873 311,591,917

White, not Hispanic 75.6% 63.4%

African American 12.1% 13.1%

Hispanic 8.99% 16.7%

Asian 2.9% 5.0%

American Indian/Alaskan Native 0.8% 1.2%

Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander 0.1% 0.2%

White Men, not Hispanic 37.8% 31.7%

By the year 2050, Hispanics will become 30.2% of the U.S. population. Non-Hispanic whites will make up 46.3% of the population.

In the U.S., our differences AND our ability to leverage the benefits of our differences, are our strengths. Last night, we saw that truism play out in vivid detail.

President Obama has his work cut out for him. The nation’s sputtering economic recovery, high unemployment, scary federal deficit, looming fiscal cliff, and gridlock amongst the electorate in Washington are daunting challenges. But last night the President acknowledged that voters have called for action, not politics as usual. He committed that in the coming weeks and months, he will reach out and work with political leaders, both democrat and republican, to identify and implement solutions to the challenges faced by our nation.

Those words depict a leader who is not only up for the challenges, but who also values diversity and is committed to inclusion. Let the revolution escalate – as it has already begun Mr. Trump – if the Washington legislators reject bipartisan agreements during the next 4 years.

Donald Trump has forfeited all rights to be taken seriously. In addition to embarrassing himself, he makes NBC look foolish for continuing to air his show. His birtherism along with calls for the president's transcripts is a craven effort to delegitimize Pres. Obama with an appeal to racism. Whatever brand the Trump name had is gone and rightfully so.
