The Tale Of Two Calf Ropers

"It was the best of times, it was worst of times" is the beginning quote of the book titled The Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. This quote came to life for this ole cowboy just yesterday. Let's enjoy the western version titled The Tale of Two Calf Ropers.

The crowd started arriving at 6:45 am. The day would be filled with calf roping, wrangling, and processing. I won't bore you will all the details of the day, so let me introduce you to two calf ropers.

Frank was first up. He mounted the gelding, Homie, and began to rope calves for the crew to begin processing. His talents on the horse were apparent from the beginning. His first three rope throws brought calves over to the team.

I watched as Frank let his horse show us his magic. Homie was well trained and did not need much direction from Frank as calf after calf was brought to the processing area. Thirty calves were processed in under an hour. Homie seemed to be enjoying the best of times. Frank also showed a sense of pride as he dismounted.

It was time for Cory to show us his talents. Circumstances didn't allow Cory to bring his own horse but this was no problem for an accomplished rider like Cory. He took Frank's saddle off of Homie, and replaced it with his own.

It was apparent from the very start that Cory did not use the same techniques as Frank did. As Cory twirled the lariat above his head, Homie began to back away from the calves in the arena. I noticed that Cory would tighten the reins as horse and rider came closer to the group of calves. This pulling motion on the reins meant only one thing to Homie. He needed back away as any good horse would do when the reins are drawn that taut.

Cory began to be frustrated quickly. He could not get Homie to do what he wanted. Mixed signals were being sent to the poor horse. Cory would use his spurs to encourage forward movement, but the reins began to be drawn tight as he twirled the lasso above his head. These mixed signals caused Homie to be confused.

Ten minutes on the horse and not one calf had been brought to the processing area by Cory. Frustration turned to capital punishment for Homie. Cory used the reins as a whips and his spurs dug into Homie's ribs. The whipping reins had Homie dancing and the spurs caused him to lunge forward. Each time Cory brought the lasso above his head, he would draw back on the reins tightly. It was time to take a break. Homie seemed grateful as it was the worst of times for him.

What seems obvious to an onlooker is not so obvious to the one whose actions brings about failure. The same horse was used by both cowboys, one with success and the other failure. What made the difference?

The horse had a knowledge of what movements were needed in order for Frank to rope calves successfully. Cory unknowingly gave mixed signals to Homie causing confusion and failure. Homie knew what needed to be done, but Cory's actions negated any knowledge that the horse had learned

Now it's time to talk business. There are employees that need very little direction from a team leader, because they have been taught how to do the job properly. Well trained employees can bring about the 'best of times' to a business!

A manager that tells his employees to go get those monthly goals, but then reprimands those same employees for actions necessary to accomplish those tasks is setting the whole business up for the 'worst of times'.

Just more thoughts from this ole cowboy.

Another fine example of good writing.

Cory should have listened to Homie, instead of wearing blinkers! That's one business relationship that may never be rebuilt. It's Cory that needs retraining not Homie.

You betcha! The horse knew exactly what to do as Frank show us. I think Cory needed a lesson in how to work with a great horse! The kicker was that Frank finished up after Cory got so frustrated! Guess what! Frank and Homie helped us finish up. It was pretty embarrassing for Cory!
