Choosing Your First Niche

So, you want to start working from home, and you know people do it all the time through the internet, so let me show you where you can start is by choosing your first niche.

What is a niche?

I had that very same question a year ago when I made the decision that I was going to make money full time from home on this crazy box full of wires I call a computer. Quite simply, a niche is a narrowed down part of a market you can concentrate on, and the list of niches to work is never ending.

For example, you want to pick something you are interested in or have a passion about, as you will be working in this area, and writing about it. You do not want to pick something that you will get bored with easily.

Lets say you are really into dogs. This is a niche, but a very broad one. If you were to just work a niche about dogs you would have so much competition you would spin your wheels.

The idea is to pick a niche that is narrow enough for you to be able to get your articles and blog posts and your website itself on page one of the major search engines, and the more narrow and specific the niche is the better the chance of doing this.

How do I narrow it down?

There are several ways to do this. One example with the dogs niche would be to take it in a specific direction. Say, lets do some research on dog training, or dog training for indoor pets, or even dog training for outside dogs. These are all a bit more specific niches. With a little research you can find one that is low competition and be able to get your content on page one of the search engine, and drive traffic back to your site.

This is only one part of a home business

If you are with me yet you really are interested in your own successful home business, and that is great. There is much to learn and it is fun to watch your business start to develop and come into reality, but you will need help. I would recommend you start by checking out places to learn the trade not only about niches but all other aspects of getting up and running.

Summary

I hope this helps you understand a bit about what all is involved in article marketing, and how and where to go to get started on your very own home business!

Good piece. For me, I just went with what I know! You could take a guess from my articles what that is. Ranking in a crowded niche is tough though! Then again, the audience is massive!

Hey Shawn, great post, remember that going too narrow can leave you with no wiggle room if the niche dries up. It always better to leave it slightly open. For instance, going with a particular brand may be a great niche but if it goes off the market you are dead in the water it would be better to leave it open to all suppliers of a certain product type.

Very good point Mark. It is so nice to be able to network with one another and offer good advice. I did have a niche go bad on me, and it was exactly for that reason.
