Developing A Marketing Plan

Most of us are in business for ourselves. Whether you are a internet marketer or a small business owner we all need to have a plan. In the financial world it is called a business plan I call it a marketing plan, because without this coupled with sales all best laid out business plans fail.

The marketing plan you put into place is the basis of your business plan. Your marketing plan will be crucial to make money for your business. The plan will be your guide to help you decide the business you start and also the products or services you will market.

So what is a marketing plan and why is it so important? A marketing plan is blueprint of the marketing efforts that a business will follow during a given period of time, it is usually reviewed each year. This is mainly done to track results.

A marketing plan is made up of two parts strategy and tactics.

In the strategy part of the plan the vision of the company is written and the tactics is how to implement the vision.What is meant by vision basically it is the foresight where you see the business in a given period of time say a year to meet the goals you have set for your company.

Once you have that set then you find the strategy. Before you put any strategy in place you first have to do the following:

Research. You have to see what the marketability of the product . This research will be the foundation of your marketing plan.

For the research you will have to keep these points on the forefront

1) Assess your customers:

a) Demographics

b) Gender

c) Martial status

d) Purchasing power and needs

e) Is your product a need or a want

f) Ethnicity

g) Target market

After you have researched your target market, find out how you will be able to get the attention of this segment of the population. Note that down as this will have to be embodied in your plan.

2) Know your competition and their market strategy. Do not go into this blind.

3) Know your product.: this is really important cause if you are not fully sold on the product how can you sell it to others. How are you going to convey your product to your buyers or customers

4) Narrow down the channels you want to use to advertise your product or service and what budget will you allocate to each marketing strategy.

5) Do some market research of your own or if you are a publisher/affiliate ask the company if they can share their research with you. This could be asking prospective customers to fill out surveys/ questionnaires or asking your friends and family for their opinion about the likeability of the product.

6) Promote yourself as the expert on t he product, topic or service.

7) Marketing dollars for promotions, free incentives,mail outs and advertising (depends on your budget)

All your documented research will help you put a marketing strategy in place. The vision for the company and the strategy you envisioned and have written down is your marketing plan. Use it as your Bible to make sure you stick to it.
