Find Feet For Your Food Trailer

Now that the presentation of your food trailer has been perfected, it’s time to show it off to the public. But where do you start? First and foremost, you need to park your truck somewhere that passersby will see it and stop to eat at it. Picking a location that has a lot of foot traffic and adequate parking for your food truck is vital to the health and well being of your business. If you’re going to rely on vehicle traffic, ask yourself if there’s enough parking for cars to park at while they order food from your mobile food business.

Once you find locations where the amount of foot – or vehicle – traffic is what you’re looking for, determine if the traffic is composed of the demographics that you’re trying to attract to you vehicle. For instance, look at who lives around the area. Are there a lot of office buildings? And if so, what kinds of businesses are located inside? If you’re trying to attract the business lunch crowd, then this answer is going to be extremely important.

But how can you determine if there’s enough foot traffic, and how do you know when “enough” is really enough? First, you can rely on the research of your local development group or chamber of commerce; these organizations can provide information on both vehicle and pedestrian traffic in certain areas of your city/town. They can also provide information on the demographics of the people in those areas.

If the information that the local development office provides isn’t detailed enough to make your decision, it may be necessary for you to calculate the foot traffic for yourself.

Here are the steps to calculating foot traffic on your own:

  • Figure out the time periods that you will be open each day; these are the time periods that you are going to investigate.
  • Make a gridded worksheet with each of your time periods, broken down into five-minute increments on the left hand side. If demographics matter, write the types of demographics that you are looking for along the top row.
  • Find a location where you can see the spot that you are measuring. Pick a visual reference point (such as a stop sign or telephone pole) so that you can count every time a person in your target market passes by.
  • Repeat this procedure for every five-minute increment in your time period.
  • After you complete this exercise, count up all of the pedestrians who passed by your reference point that were in the group of demographics that you were looking for.

Obviously, not everyone in your target market is going to stop at your mobile food stand. To take this into consideration, cut the total number by two-thirds and see if this number is a sufficient amount of business for your food truck. If so, you may want to consider it as a location. Although, this is just an approximation, it will provide valuable insight on the locations that you’re looking at for your business.
