Guerilla Marketing: Out - Of - The - Box Branding

You have probably heard of this phrase that young, hip tech firms routinely use to help spread the word. Would this kind of tactic be good for you? Here are some facts: Guerrilla Marketing is an advertising strategy that aims to gain lots of new followers and fans through low-cost branding measures that ‘jump out at people’, rather than have prospects find you through regular avenues.

Although this phrase is more recognizable as a warfare term, the same rules apply to Branding your business: When you are commuting to work, or online while working, what marketing efforts do you see that have been overused? Where you can see the pitch coming? Where you long for something that is different, and surprising Try these 'ambush' efforts to see how it helps your business. It's not war, it CAN be fun.

Firstly, think ‘high energy’ and ‘imagination’. Based on events marketing, your idea should be fast, colourful or loud, and a plus in someone’s day: Take your prospect by surprise, make an impression and create huge amounts of social buzz. The most successful examples require a large, immediate audience – think of the ‘Flash Mob’ videos that you see set in public spaces. Watch these videos again, and see where you recognize the branding taking place. Your aim is to attract your prospect in a deeper, and more personal level.

Where your People Are.

I would suggest finding a convention, festival, or gathering in your geographic community where a lot of qualified prospects will be. It may be as simple as giving away muffins with delegates’ morning coffee at a convention, but you may look at trying to get some kind of press attention with your campaign. Here are a few thought processes you may want to employ to leave attendees buzzing:

Use Your Imagination.

You cannot be to outrageous, here. But remember not to upset people - they could be your prospects. Be colourful, or loud, or both. Grab people's attention.

Let Your Audience Spread the Word.
