Marketing Assistant Job Description

As the title implies, a marketing assistant works for your company’s marketing department and carries out a wide variety of marketing tasks that correspond directly to generating clients or selling products. A marketing assistant’s pivotal role is often overseen by the marketing manager, although some smaller companies may employ a marketing assistant as one of the sole positions dedicated to marketing.

The marketing assistant is someone that is knowledgeable about various aspects of marketing including press releases, articles, social media marketing and more. In addition, marketing assistants must have strong communication, sales and marketing skills and a proven ability to work directly with not only consumers, but also account executives.

Individuals in this job are often forced to go above and beyond their “regular” daily job description in order to make the most of the company’s marketing strategies while staying on budget. This means that they often have to employ creative marketing strategies as well.

Although this position varies greatly depending on the company, some of the more common job duties and required skills of the marketing assistant include:

Administrative and Office Support. The marketing assistant typically handles scheduling conferences or meetings between account executives and potential clients, as well as managing calendars and making various arrangements.

Computer Skills. Because so much of the marketing department’s job is analyzing consumer data, the marketing assistant must have a solid grasp of different computer programs and be extremely web-savvy. In most instances, the marketing assistant will often overlook the company’s social media account such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and others.

Creative skills. The marketing assistant also creates presentations, using a variety of computer programs. As such, they must be well versed on new programs and stay on top of the latest marketing trends as well.

Excellent communication skills. The marketing assistant should be able to clearly and effectively communicate with a wide range of different people. They should possess the proverbial silver tongue and be comfortable in different scenarios.

Eye for detail. The marketing assistant must also keep an eye on their competitors. This is another vital role of the marketing department and one that often falls on the marketing assistant’s shoulders. The assistant keeps an eye on the competitor database and analyzes the successes and failures of various competitors to help the company stay ahead of the game. They should be able to complete a detailed marketing and competitive analysis also.

  • Promotional Materials. The marketing assistant often is responsible for producing and distributing collateral marketing material that may also include email newsletters, online promotions, etc.

In short, the marketing assistant’s job description can vary by as much or as little as the company needs. The person chosen for the position should have extensive industry experience and be well versed in online and offline marketing strategies. In most instances, a sales and marketing background is preferred. If you’re considering adding a marketing assistant, choose wisely as the right one can be an invaluable team member that will help you establish a stronger brand and online/offline reputation.
