How Do You Keep A Marriage Happy?

Now, I'm going to tell you something that'll blow your boots off. It is possible to have a happy marriage. Yes, really, it is! Further to that, I'm going to answer your question; how do you keep a marriage happy?

One of the problems that young couples face, is that they think all they're doing is to simply marry a member of the opposite sex, (or same sex), and that's it. Life can carry on much as it was before. Well, sorry chaps, but it doesn't quite work that way.

More and more, teenagers are growing up and having the words 'me' and 'I' drummed into them. 'I' must have my space. This belongs to 'me', that's yours. When you marry, there must be a radical re-think from the way you've been living. From two individuals, you've now turned into 'a couple'.

Now, a couple is an entity just as much as 'you' are an entity, and the sooner you come to this startling realization, the better. You should come to it well before you marry.

'Now if I propose to her, and she accepts, then we'll be a couple, sharing our lives. Is this what I want?'

If it is, then down on one knee you go, and propose. If it isn't, for goodness sake, hold off. Assuming you decide to go ahead, here are 4 points which may help.

Number 1. None of us is perfect. We all have clay feet. When the first fine careless romantic raptures are over, both of you start to notice little faults in the other. For the marriage to be successful, you must both look past these faults. No marriage will sail along on perfectly still waters, and he or she who thinks it will is going to capsize the boat. Try to live by the three little words, 'give and take'.

Number 2. There are those to whom the word 'sorry' was somehow left out of their dictionary. Whether you like it or not, you're going to have arguments, little tiffs and disagreements. If the fault is completely one sided, then that person should learn to say sorry.

"I'm sorry, love, it was my fault."

More usually, though, there's enough blame to go around the pair of you. But even if it isn't completely your fault, apologize anyway. If you don't, either of you, then you risk a sulk session and there's nothing worse than that.

Number 3. We've established that we all argue. That's inevitable. But for goodness sake, try to keep it civilized. Cursing and swearing, name calling and pulling faces at your partner and generally acting like a third grader, can permanently injure your marriage.

Don't be defensive or critical. "Why pick on me all the time? Look what a mess you've made of it!" There's absolutely no cause to 'pick' on your partner at all. In a hypnosis session, a good therapist will 'suggest'. The reason is that no-one likes being ordered around. When you criticize, do the same thing. Suggest, and do it tactfully.

Number 4. Unfortunately, old people tend to be pushed aside in Western countries and treated like old idiots. They aren't. They were young once and if you know a couple who've been happily married for a long time, don't be afraid to ask their advice. You'll find that the elderly couple doesn't listen too hard when one or the other is talking about something with which the other disagrees.

Some of these advice columns recommend that you should 'bring everything out in the open'. Wrong! Probably both of you have passionate feelings about a certain subject. So keep away from them. It could end up in a king size row.

I do hope this has been helpful.

I love the song that says "there's a tree out in the back yard that never has been broken by the wind, and the reason it's still standing is it was strong enough to bend". Lovely article. I'm sure there are 104 points that could be listed but these are a very great start.
