Mississppi River Flooding And Your Marriage - How to Work on Your Marriage When Adversity Comes Like A Flood

The threat of the Mississippi River flooding many populated areas along its banks caused great concern just a few weeks ago. Many people worked together to face this adversity.

Some compared this flood to the Flood of 1927. At any rate, many were concerned about their safety and the safety of their relatives.

But, what does this have to do with your marriage?

We can see four things that happened in relation to this latest episode of flooding that can be compared to you as you cope with difficulties you might face in your marriage. Wait, did I say, "might"? It is pretty well a "given" that difficulties will come to you! That just seems to be a part of life.

So, do you want to know how to work on your marriage when the floods of adversity come your way?

What are those four parallels that will help you figure out how to work on your marriage?

Here they are:

1. Relieve pressure in other areas.

Spillways above Baton Rouge and New Orleans were opened to relieve pressure on levees further down the river.

Many times pressures outside the home cause a great deal of stress in a marriage. Sometimes reevaluating your priorities will help you to see some things that you can let go. Then when the extra pressure is relieved, you are better able to focus on the important things of life, such as the importance of your marriage.

2. Evacuate where you can.

The mayor of Memphis Tennessee warned residents of low-lying areas that they should evacuate their homes for their own safety.

Some did not heed the warning until the water got above the threshold of their doorsteps.

Sometimes it may be necessary for you to relocate in order to save your marriage. Apart from a physical relocation, you may evacuate some areas in your marriage where you have stubbornly held on to some of your selfish ideas.

3. Prepare yourself ahead of time to face hard times.

Many people were saved from the Mississippi River flooding its banks because of years of planning and preparation put in by the Core of Engineers.

You should take steps to affair-proof you marriage. You also need to build in that life-long commitment that you gave allegiance to when you repeated your wedding vows.

4. Creatively use your own resources.

To prevent the Mississippi River flooding and destroying their homes, many residents built their own levees from sand bags. Others also built drainage ditches. They creatively used their own resources, and in many instances, though it did not stop the water completely, their actions did protect their property.

When adversity comes, are you just tempted to "throw in the towel," or do you say, "Don't worry. We will get through this!"

If you want to know how to work on your marriage, keep in mind these fours ideas that can be gleaned from how people acted and reacted when they were faced with the prospect of the Mississippi River flooding. Maybe it seems like the "flood" in your marriage is pretty far along--like the water is at your doorstep. Even if your spouse has left you temporarily, your creative use of your own resources may allow you to get back together. The floods were a tragedy, but they can serve to remind you that you often can creatively figure out how to work on your marriage.

When it came to the Mississippi River flooding, many were hurt, but many were spared also. When it comes to your marriage facing a flood of adversity, may you be among the number who survive such tragedies.
