The Marriage Triangle

I sort of met Tina my senior year in high school. I went out with the same girl most of the way through high school. We broke up for a few months during my senior year, at which time I went out with another girl, but that was kind of a rebound thing. We got back together and then broke up for good after the prom. Anyhow, while all this was going on I did a lot of goofing around in school. My buddies and I had a study hall in the cafeteria when I noticed this cute girl sitting all by herself. I asked my friends about her and they didn't know anything about her. Finally some one found out that she was a new girl and that she just moved here from Phillipsburg. So, me being me, I had to flirt with her.

The first time that our eyes met I winked at her. She blushed and looked away. The second time our eyes met, I wiggled my eyebrows and she turned a bright shade of red and looked away. The third time, I wiggled my ears at her. She turned a frightening shade of red and moved to where I couldn't see her. It was a lot of fun - for me.

The next time that I had that study hall she was back in the same seat and I'd start all over again. I kept trying to come up with new ways to embarrass her. I'd blow her kisses, send her notes, hold up little signs with stuff on it, just to see how long it would take for her to get up and move. It was entertaining for my buddies but it was intriguing to me. I tried to catch her in the hallway after class but she just ran away. Then I graduated and that ended that.

After graduation I took over the family business and hit the ground running. I busted my butt six days a week and on the seventh day I played softball. I really missed playing baseball and a guy that worked for me tried to talk me into playing softball. I just laughed at him and said that softball was for girls. After a while though, I caved in and started playing. It was a lot of fun. I didn't have much time for anything else. I was kind of dating a girl from Altoona when I got the time.

When I showed up for our first home game of the season I started looking around for Gerry, the guy that worked for me. I saw him sitting on the grass next to his wife and sitting on the grass next to her - was the girl from study hall! My jaw must of dropped and hit the infield because Gerry came over and asked me what was wrong. I asked him, "Who's that girl sitting with your wife?" "That's my stepdaughter, Tina." he replied. "I know her - kind of." I said. "How do you know her," Gerry said, "She just transferred here from Phillipsburg last year." "I had a study hall with her last year." I croaked. "You must have been the jerk that kept flirting with he then?" Gerry laughed. "Yeah, that was me," I said as I took off running towards her because she looked like a frightened rabbit looking for hole to jump in. I plopped down on the blanket next to her and said, "Your not running away until I get a chance to talk to you, Tina." But she wouldn't, or couldn't, talk. I asked her a bunch of questions but all she did was look down at the grass - her face as red as the shirt she was wearing. Finally, the game was about to start so I had to get up and go play.

I made a complete fool of myself that day trying to impress Tina. Every time I got up to bat I fell on my butt trying to hit the ball over the fence. Every time the ball came to me, I dropped it. My team mates were so mad at me they wanted to pull me but we only had ten players so there was no one to put in my place. That day, I couldn't have cared less.

As soon as the games were over I went straight over to Tina and asked her if she wanted to go on a date. She said in a tiny little voice , "If it's OK with Mom." That was the first time I ever heard her speak. I looked at her mom and she smiled and said,” Yes." I looked back at Tina and said, "How about tomorrow night at seven?" Tina looked up at me, and for the first time, smiled at me and said, "Yes." With that I turned around and walked across the field, picked up my stuff, got in my pickup and left.

The next day at work Gerry told me that as I walked back to my truck my feet weren't touching the ground. I don't know about that, but I do know that that was the beginning of a relationship that lasts to this day. Even after 34 years, whenever I'm with her, I swear my feet still don't touch the ground.

A lot of couples feel that, as they get older, their lives get stuck in a rut. Tina and I never felt that way, we’ve never had time to. There’s always something that needed to be done, goals that we were trying to accomplish, kids to raise and so on. Don’t get me wrong, like every couple we’ve had our ups and downs, a lot more ups than downs. People are always asking us how we’ve been able to stick together for 34 years. I just tell them that besides love, you both have to be willing to compromise. Marriage is all about give and take, if you can’t learn to do that, you’re never going to be in a lasting relationship of any kind. To see what I mean just look at your long term friendships. Over the years you’ve had to make compromises so you can keep people as your friends because you like them and want their friendship. You didn’t always agree with what they said or did, but you agreed to disagree and went on with your friendship.

Marriage is a triangle. You need three points to make a triangle and without any one of those points the triangle will fall apart. The marriage triangle consists of these three points: Love, a willingness to compromise, and friendship. Like a triangle, if you remove any of these points, your marriage will collapse. I won’t try to kid you, it takes some effort to make it work, but believe me, it’s worth it.
