The Martial Arts are rising rapid in popularity lately, and this can be for a number of reasons. However, most people have absolutely no idea how many different variations of sport martial arts there really are. Read on, and I will discuss some of the different sport martial arts available as well as the different strategies involved with each one.

Many people group all martial arts together as “Karate.” This is actually very offensive to not only the practitioners, but also to the cultures from which the martial arts are derived. Furthermore, some styles are as different from each other as night and day. Striking versus grappling arts are obviously much different in nature. It is in your best benefit to learn one martial art from another. However, Western many combat sports such as boxing and wrestling can be grouped in as martial arts.

There are many different striking arts, and each will have different rules for competition. If you want to learn martial arts for sport, then you want to learn the difference between the different styles. Each different style will have different rules and regulations depending on the backing organization and tournament host. Karate’s form of sport is known as Kumite, and competitors are scored 1 point for each strike to the body or head, 2 points for a kick to the body, and 3 points for a kick to the head. The World Karate Federation also allows sweeps and takedowns for 3 points. Taekwondo’s Kyolugi is the most widely practiced sport martial art worldwide. In Taekwondo Sparring, competitors may kick to the body or head, with extra points being awarded for head kicks and jumping or flying kicks. Kickboxing is separate sport that does not stem from any particular traditional style of martial arts, but rather stands as a common ground for all the striking arts. Practitioners of Karate, Taekwondo, Kung Fu, Western Boxing and Muai Thai all have backgrounds that can make them formidable in a Kickboxing ring. In all styles, a winner may be declared by knocking out his opponent.

Grappling styles such as Wrestling, Judo, and Jujitsu all have much different rules and objectives. For example, in Wrestling, your objective to win the match is to pin your opponent’s shoulders to the match and hold them there for 3 seconds. This will result in an instant win for the wrestler. In Jujitsu, your objective is to obtain a submission, or in layman’s terms, to put your opponent in a position of so much pain that they do not want to continue. In Judo, a large majority of the points or wins can come from takedowns. However, a submission can result in a win. The difference in Judo is that most of the grappling will be done on the feet, and the competitor can win when a single throw is executed properly. The rules are much more detailed and specific, however they are beyond the scope of this article. If you wish to learn sport martial arts in grappling styles, you may want to do some research and find out if it is right for you.

Mixed martial Arts – This is an open form of sport fighting that promotes both striking and grappling abilities. Many people consider this the “Ultimate” form of sport martial arts, and that is why the name “Ultimate Fighting Championships” or UFC was chosen. This was the first major form of MMA introduced, and was banned in many countries due to its brutal nature. Since then it has become much more civilized and has become more popular in recent years. A match may be decided by a knockout or by a submission. If neither of those occurs, the judges may score a fight based on strikes landed, takedowns, and submissions attempted. Many MMA Gyms have been springing up in the last decade, though if you want to learn martial arts for sport and are looking specifically at MMA, then it is usually best to pick a gym with instructors that have a strong background in both striking and grappling arts.

So there you have it, a basic rundown on a few of the many sport martial arts out there. If you are truly looking to learn martial arts for competitive sport then do some research to make sure that you have found the style that’s right for you, and make sure that you’re following a good program for success.
