Martial Arts A Way Of Peace Or Violence

Most if not all people love a good action flick. We as humans love the suspenseful action, especially when it has to do with two people beating each other up. For what ever reason people love this form of entertainment. People love it so much that "boxing" is no longer the fighting sport to watch. Everyone is into the U.F.C. (Ultimate fighting championship) today where two guys are put in octagon shaped ring and duke it out with minimal rules until someone is submitted, knocked out, or the time has run out. If you ask me this isn't real martial arts being used in battle, nor in my opinion is this a realistic fight.

Martial arts is 100% of the time a fighting method of self-defense. While others may have certain principles which apply to them which is what makes them different styles of Martial arts. The main reason for training in martial arts is to learn self-defense or to fight to protect yourself and others, never to turn around and use it to hurt people.

There are certain arts like tae kwon do and Brazilian jujitsu that focus more on the sport in their fighting, however they are still used as self-defense arts. In my opinion a fight in the U.F.C isn't very realistic. The main reason for this opinion is because there are RULES. In a street fight there are no rules except one, SURVIVE. On the street one may pinch, pull hair, grab a weapon, hit the eyes and groin etc. In the U.F.C. if any of these moves are attempted the fighter will be disqualified immediately. While Martial arts are mostly taught and used for self-defense and fighting there are many martial arts that are taught for other benefits, such as stress relief, weight loss, learning focus, and to learn a way of yourself.

Bruce lee formed a style called Jeet Kun Do (J.K.D.). This is a style without style. Bruce lee wanted to create a fighting style where people looked deep into their minds and truly find out who they are to make their own style. While J.K.D. is a style to be formless there are certain principles that need to be followed to better yourself as a martial artist. An example of these principles, economy of motion where ones movements are made with the least amount of energy to create and use the most amount of power. Another example would be in terms of a self-defense grab, when ever someone grabs your wrist or arm, to break free always fight against the thumb, not the other four fingers. J.K.D. is a practical self-defense art that uses punches, kicks, trapping, and grappling techniques to get away or defend against an attacker.

Where as an art like Aikido which is a softer art uses body manipulation and superior angling to put his/her opponent down, reusing the opponents energy against them. In this art one can be any age for the techniques required zero strength, the same can be said in J.K.D. The difference between the two arts is that Aikido is strictly a self defense art where the opponent's body is being manipulated, thrown around and put in locks, where as in J.K.D. no matter the age if you know your power and use economy of motion to send your power a J.K.D. practitioner can knock out his/her opponent put them in a lock, really just over power his/her opponent using not nearly as much energy that you would think is needed.

Martial arts is taught to create peace, once one has learned such techniques to defend or hurt another person the less likely they want to fight and more likely they will be a peaceful person. Martial arts is a path to find one self, and a way angry upset people can learn to control their emotions and learn to overcome in a productive way. God bless.
