The Secret Of Mastering Chi Sau Wing Chun

Do you find yourself stuck somewhere in your Sticky Hand training?

I understand that Chi Sau/ChiSao, can become a deep obsession for Wing Chun practitioners like you.

So in this case, hoping to reveal the secret in mastering this form, I seek Wing Chun expert’s opinion to provide valuable insight.

But first, as you might already know, Wing Chun varies greatly from lineage to lineage, or from person to person. This is quite obvious due to the way Ip Man taught at different stages of his life. Another factor to consider is the understanding of the student and the personal interpretation of the student.

A great example of this would be the legendary Bruce Lee himself, where as you can see, his style although originated from Wing Chun, differs greatly from the traditional form as he developed better understanding of the form or pattern; and the martial art itself.

How to Train Chi Sau Effectively?

Now back to Chi Sao. Chi Sao as you learn, helps develop the automatic reflex, combinations and flow, listening sensitivity, forward driving but softly balanced energy, center controlling timing and the proper application of Wing Chun motions.

According to Sifu Chuck O’Neill, the major problem of learning Chi Sao is that, you will be gaining very little in the way of advancement if you’re concentrating to memorize combination of techniques to get better at it. To combat this however, he said, the best thing to do is to find a partner and train intentionally.

By training intentionally he meant that you must learn to quit the tendency to think of making your moves. To further increase your Chi Sau mastery, that is the reason the best thing to do is having a partner that you can work with sharing ideas on areas of Chi Sau both of you can improve.

Once you have improved, find new partner of different shape and size because this way you’d get the chance to practice the theories and techniques you’ve learned with previous partner, so you’ll know what works better on different people.

Is Chi Sau a Drill?

As Sifu Sam Kwok puts it; a drill has a predefined set of movements that each person repeatedly follows.

The beginning of Chi Sau, has only a set of movements where each person starts with Fok Sau in their left hand and the right hand moving between Bong Sau and Tan Sau.

The second Chi Sau, on the other hand, anyone can start with an attack.

A lot of student constantly asking if they can do ‘this’ or do ‘that’ in Chi Sau to master it. To this, Sifu Sam says YES. However, he insisted that Chi Sau in itself is not actual fighting but rather a way of testing what works for you and what doesn’t. The learning point is not to get hit and to know when to attack.

You are never confining in one movement. It is truly a continuous circle of enrichment and learning. One is never really done. Lots and lots of Chi Sau only create a constantly upward learning curve.

You can learn Chi Sau quickly with regular training. If you have limited access to regular or daily training you can watch videos that cover every positions and techniques in details, and later get instructor's advice on what seen in the videos.

Wing Chun without Chi Sau is blind and Chi Sau without Wing Chun is an empty scheme.
