What Is The Best Martial Art To Learn

If you are interested in learning to defend yourself, you might be asking, “What is the best martial art to learn?” If you are seeking the answer to this question then you are in luck. There are many very good martial arts to choose from and they all have something valuable to offer. There are also many qualified instructors for you to choose from and they all can teach you something. The answer to your question depends a great deal on what you are looking for and what you expect to gain from your training.

Some of the different styles and disciplines you have to choose from include Karate, Kung Fu, Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Aikido and many others. And all of these fighting styles have many different variations included in each one of them. Some instructors will claim that their particular style is the best, but the wisest ones will always take what is useful from different styles and use it to the greatest advantage.

So Which One is the Best?

Some martial arts are more effective than others when it comes to certain situations. For instance, some styles are more effective when it comes to defending yourself and loved ones from a real life violent attack. Some styles are more suited for tournament fighting.

Let me clarify what I just said. Many have both a tournament aspect and a self defense aspect. It depends on which techniques are being taught to accomplish the end result. If you practice for tournament fighting, then you will learn techniques that are effective for fighting in tournaments. If you practice to defend yourself in a real life attack, you will learn techniques that are effective for that. Some will tell you that you can use the same techniques for tournament and self defense fighting, but that is not true in most cases. In competition fighting, you execute techniques that are designed to not permanently injure or disable your opponent. In a real life situation, you want to injure and disable your opponent. And the old saying is true, “You play the way you practice.”

So the best way to proceed is to seek out a school and instructor that teaches what you want to learn. If you want to compete in tournaments then seek out a school that specializes in that. If you want to learn to defend yourself from violent physical assault in real life then seek an instructor that teaches that.

In my opinion, Tae Kwon Do is a very good basic fighting style to begin with. There are many qualified instructors available and it is a really fun martial art to learn. It is one of my favorites. Tae Kwon Do is simple, straight forward and very effective for tournament and street confrontation, (just remember that tournament techniques are for tournament and street for street). That is not to say that other styles are not as good, they are all good for their purpose.

Summary

There is no perfect martial art. The best way is to start out with one style and as you progress and become proficient in it you can branch out and learn other styles, disciplines and techniques. You are not tied into learning and being loyal to any one style. Learn all that you can from all styles and use them to improve yourself. And above all, have fun as you’re doing it.
