There are a lot of subjects that even parents still struggle with and mathematics for kids seems to be one of the biggest worry's for us. Presently my son is only six so the nightmare of maths has not really hit me yet - in school it's safe to say that in school I found maths nothing less than impossible at times.
This is not to say I have not been preparing for the subject of mathematics for kids to arise - it's only a matter of time before be arrives home from school with maths homework. I have discovered that mathematics for kids can be taught outside of school in a relatively easy manner using a few easy principles.
It's safe to say that children would rather be doing just about anything other than sitting down in school struggling through maths problems or sitting at home going through maths homework. What you have to do is grab their attention and try your best to make their attention stick. Unfortunately mathematics for kids is an integral part of all education programs throughout the world so there is no escaping it.
You will have to look for new and exciting methods to teach maths to kids so starting thinking outside the box. Mathematics is all around us and hone in on this to create fun ways to implement maths into your children. By teaching mathematics for kids at home I am not suggesting you should embark on a homeschooling project - just help with their homework and this will work wonders with honing their later life maths skills.
A table, a pencil, a calculator and an exercise book - not very appealing right? By letting a child see this in a room in your house is not going to fill them with much excitement ( much the opposite really! ). The home is your weapon so why not try to use one of his/her board games as a teaching tools - dice are a numerical tool after all. What about a deck of cards? Even games like 'snap' have an added mathematical element to them.
What I have started to do recently is to use a supermarket trip to implement mathematics for kids into my son before he starts coming home from school with the 'real' mathematics. Just by counting how many jacket potatoes dad is putting into a bag to purchase can work wonders and costs nothing ( except for the price of the potatoes!!! ). Remember - mathematics for kids should be fun.
