My Math Journey Chose My Major Naturally

Many people choose their major based on how much money they will make in that field, but I chose my major because I want a career doing something I love. I realized that it doesn’t matter how much money I make, that God will provide all of my needs if I'm committed to him and doing positive things. With that being said mathematics is my major. Mathematics is my major because I thirst for it, and I have a passion for it. Now I will explain to you my life long journey of math with competitions and situations I have overcome.

Mathematics is my major and I have love math since my younger days.

I remember in kindergarten when I first notice that I was above average in mathematics. My teacher had asked me to participate in the math derby in which I had no ideal what it was. Of course I had no choice but to accept the offer because my mother made all the decisions. So I went home and study hard every day until it was time for the competition. Finally competition day was here and I was filled with nervousness throughout my body. Well when the competition actually started and I answered my first question I felt a little bit more relaxed. At the end of the competition I had came in first place. Ever since that day when I felt like the world revolved around me I enjoyed doing math.

I was in math competitions throughout the rest of my life. In the eight grade I was in the district math tournament and I placed second and my overall team placed first. My teacher was so happy, I never seen her face so bright a day in my life. She looked like a glazed donut. I was appreciated to have her as a teacher because she helped take my math skills to another level which was great. It was great because that summer I was accepted into this math program that guarantee I take algebra two with trigonometry when I start high school. I successfully completed the program and started in algebra two with trigonometry in high school.

Well when high school started and I attended that math class the nervous phase took its toll on me once again.

It didn’t take a toll on me because of the math, it took a toll on me because I was in a classroom surrounded by all juniors and I felt I had something to prove. I felt I had something to prove because being mediocre is just being normal. I'm far above that, so I had to make my name known all over again. After that semester in that class everybody knew the Appleberries. They didn’t know me because I was smart in math, they knew me because my brothers had already started the trend that we was smart, so all I had to do was keep up the expectations they had already set.

Yeah, I know they made it easier for me to have popularity, but that wasn’t good enough I wanted to make a name for myself. So junior year in high school I took Precalculus and I took the hardest math teacher in the school Mr. Pope. I remember when I first walked into the classroom he starting teaching about three sections and I was clueless on what he was talking about because he started reviewing stuff with former students that took him last semester. I was sitting in my desk looking dumbfounded and Mr. Pope looked at me and said welcome to hell on wheels and I love to drive.

After he said that the class looked at me and laughed and said we thought you were smart in math, guess not. I was filled with so many thoughts and you can bet that changing my schedule was on my agenda asap. After I went home I thought about it, and told myself that I have something to prove and I can never be the best if I don’t try. So I went back to Mr. Pope math class with a whole new mindset. I was intimidated at all, I was ready to work. By the end of Precalculus I was helping all the other students with they assignment, I became Captain of the math team though I was a junior and the rest of the class was seniors.

I felt like I had accomplished something and once again we went to the state district math tournament and my team placed second because we had one slacker on our team. I wasn’t disappointed because the slacker was my girlfriend, but I did wish we let another person go instead of her. Senior year I took AP Calculus which was harder than the other math, but I manage to do well and make a three on the AP Calculus test.

Math has always been my favorite subject and I have always enjoyed doing it. So when I came to college I though what's better to do then to be mathematics major and try to be a math professor after I get my degree. Now you all know why I chose my major, it's not because of the money it's because math is my heart.
