Consumers Warned About Potential Pill Mix Ups After Machinery Malfunction

Novartis, a Swiss pharmaceutical company has announced a voluntary recall of a number of its most popular and highest selling medications from both its over the counter and prescription lines due to a potentially dangerous issue. Machinery malfunctions are being blamed for the problems which may have possibly allowed some medications to have been packaged in the wrong bottles while others were damaged and broken. Both the company and spokespeople for the US Food and Drug Administration are urging people to err on the side of caution with any of the affected medications.

Novartis Pharmaceuticals lists over the counter medications including pain relievers, Excederin and Bufferin, the stimulant, NoDoz and the gas relieving medication, Gas-X as those that may have been impacted. Prescription drugs, Percocet, Percodan and Opana are also potentially involved. Pictures of each medication has been posted on the company's web site and everyone is urged to inspect and compare all of their pills before they take any of them. Anyone who has a potential for an allergic reaction should discuss their next steps with their medical provider before taking any of the pills for additional safety. Those who are concerned about their over the counter drugs should either discard them or bring them back for a refund, according to those spokespeople.

The incident was revealed during an internal review which found that several pills were broken or chipped and some of the packaging was incorrect. Further testing found that other medications in the plant were similarly affected. The plant, located in Lincoln, Nebraska has been shut down and will remain closed while updates and upgrades are completed.

Novartis has faced a number of complaints in recent years as well as set backs in their research and development areas. According to reports, the company has had nearly two hundred complaints that have gone unresolved since 2009. Most of those complaints were not even investigated according to FDA warning letters sent to the company. The FDA shut down a trial run of a medication after several cases of renal failure were reported.

The company says that so far, there have been no medical reports of any allergic reactions or other adverse events related to this machinery mix up. Analysts are saying that the potential for the wrong pill getting into the wrong bottle is relatively low but that does not mean that consumers should not take heed of the warnings.

Novartis is a Swiss company with affiliates all over the world and was created in 1996 via merger
