How to Recover From A Brain Injury

Concussions can turn your life around. One moment you are living your life, and all of a sudden something has changed. It can be difficult to understand how to recover; do I just wait for it to go away? Some concussions do heal. For some, things change more dramatically than others, and their concussion doesn't seem to be healing. This is called Post Concussion Syndrome, or PCS.

It took me a while to even understand that the concussion I was told I had from a car accident was affecting me. It took me even longer to know that the recovery was not fitting into the perfect once-comforting timeline given to me by numerous doctors. Over time, I have learned some of the most important things we can do to help our recovery. If you are reading this for a loved one who has suffered a concussion, you can help support them in focusing in on these aspects of their life.

Here's a few ideas on how to help support the recovery from a mild brain injury:

1. Find Support. At the tip of your fingertips are tons of people who are suffering with concussions or post concussion syndrome. There can be so much comfort in connecting with other people who have gone through or are currently going through a similar experience as you. Even if your lives are completely different, and across the world, having someone who can't stand the sound of lots of people talking, struggles to sleep, worries about school/work, experiences other symptoms in the same way you do can be such a relief. There are forums online and on facebook that can help you connect with others and their families.

2. Rest. That means: after you read this article, close your computer or turn off your phone, lay down, and close your eyes. For some reason, this can be so difficult! But brains need rest, especially after being jostled by an injury. It helps to set aside specific times for not doing anything, preferably in a dark, quiet place where you can let your brain relax completely. Doing this as part of your daily routine is best.

3. Eat Healthy. There are so many processed foods that are easy to grab and eat, especially because preparing food is definitely not usually top on the list when your head is pounding, and following recipes is as frustrating as trying to read Chinese. Eating healthy ingredients and eliminating unhealthy foods is key. There are specific foods and supplements for concussions, that have been shown to have positive effects on healing. Being aware of this can provide so much relief to those of you who are suffering with symptoms from your head injury. Myself and many others with concussions have found a lot of relief through natural remedies.
