Guided Meditation – Taking Our Mind to A Healthier Place

Have you ever heard the saying about a healthy mind making a healthy body? I've always believed that you need to have the right mindset before you attempt anything. Whether it’s a new job, achieving a certain level at your sport or going on a healthier diet plan, having our brain functioning correctly is the most important part of the process. This is where meditation can help. It’s basically exercise for the mind and it also helps you to relax without taking a pill or a drink of something.

Okay, so if you haven’t tried meditation before and think it’s just something Tibetan monks are into, then take some time out and actually try it yourself. No, you don’t have to consult the Dalia Lama or a mystical guru first, just a few minutes a day is all you need. The object of meditation is to clear your mind of all that’s going on in your life, be it good or bad, and create a bit of fresh thinking space. This will then allow you to focus with clarity and be able to tackle your next objective in a more defined and exacting manner. You will also find yourself more relaxed and your stress levels can be reduced.

The Candle – a 5 minute workout

This is how I started to learn to meditate, and it’s an easy way to begin if you haven’t tried it before. Choose a time of the day that suits you best, whether it’s just before you go to work, a break during the day or when you get home. All it takes is 5 minutes.

1. Find a quiet space for yourself, preferably a small, darkened room

2. Sit on the floor with your back straight and legs crossed (use a cushion if you wishl). I don’t recommend you lie down as you may fall asleep. Sitting on a chair is an option if you find that crossing your legs is difficult

3. Light a small candle and place it on a chair or table in front of you at eye level

4. Place your arms on your lap with the palms of your hands facing up

5. Focus on the flame of the candle and take slow, deep breaths. Inhale through the nose and exhale through the mouth

6. Do this for at least 5 minutes, then stand up and have a stretch. If you want to do more, 10 or 15 minutes, by all means go ahead, but I have found 5 minutes to be adequate enough to begin with and you can progress from there

You may find at first that clearing your mind is difficult, well, that’s only natural, as the brain is always being active and there will always be stuff going through your head. However, when you have done this a few times, it does become easier and you will almost automatically switch off. If there is outside noise around you, you can listen to instrumental ambient music through ear plugs or headphones. This will shut out the distractions and help you focus more clearly.

Guided Meditation - your personal mind coach

So if you try the candle method and it works for you, then continue this regularly and in time you will find yourself being able to concentrate at a more advanced level and achieve tasks with relative ease. If you still have trouble clearing the brain of all thoughts, I can recommend guided meditation. This is where you listen to a recorded program that combines ambient music, natural sounds and a narrative human voice that, yes, guides you through your meditation session. The voice helps you focus through guided imagery and a mesmerizing script combined with immersive music that take you deeper into a relaxed state of bliss. At the end you feel refreshed and revitalised, ready to face the world again but in a more positive frame of mind.

I enjoy meditating and incorporate it in my daily health regime along with good nutrition and physical exercise. Once you have tried it, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
