Hmm what meditation does? That's a lovely question that has an answer that some may think is just over exaggeration, simply because it does so many things and provides so many benefits!
Let's start with an easy one. Meditation makes you relaxed. Think about it you're sitting in contemplation, in a comfortable pose, in a hopefully comfortable place, how can you not be relaxed! But this relaxation carries over into day to day life, after meditating for a while you'll start to notice a more relaxed approach in every situation.
Next on what meditation does, is it lowers stress! This is kind of a no brainer after the first point, but nonetheless it's still important to cover. Meditation basically raises your stress threshold, so situations that once stressed you out wont stress you out anymore. For example, if your a driver who gets really stressed out driving to work, after practicing meditation you wont get stressed anymore. You may even find that same drive very relaxing!
Another what meditation does benefit is increasing brainpower. If your anything like me this will be very welcomed! Who couldn't use a little more thinking power? It goes like this: when meditating your brain forges new connections that are speedier than the ones previously there. How cool! These new connections allow you to process information faster, leading to quicker thinking and increased brainpower.
I'll give you one more answer to the question what meditation does?
It gives more meaning to your life. It's a well known fact that those who meditate are generally happier, and lead more fulfilling lives, but why is that? It's a combination of less stress and worry, increased brainpower and increased relaxation. This allows the person to experience an entirely new life, one not tied down by the general worries that affect so many of us.
I also used to be part of this group. My life was filled with worry and anxiety, stress and rumination. But since I've started meditating those have all fallen by the wayside. So what meditation does is make your life better, plain and simple.
I don't want to sound like im preaching the end all cure all, but meditation is very powerful. However, it does take time, a long time. These benefits do not come overnight, but when did anything good ever come overnight (and no the lottery doesn't count.) Simply knowing what meditation does will not be enough.
You have to practice as much as possible, everyday if you can fit that into your schedule! The more you meditate the better you get, and the more results you receive, but you must enjoy meditation for the sake of meditating.
What does that mean?
It means you should enjoy meditating for the process of doing it, not strictly for the benefits, otherwise you wont last very long. Simple as that.
