What Meditation is Not

Meditation is not simply monks sitting in a quiet cave contemplating life, and growing old. Although this is sometimes the image that gets conjured up when we think of meditating it simply is not true! Unless of course you're a monk, but that's a different story. I'd like to dispel some common myths about meditation and we can truly uncover what meditation is not.

1. What meditation is not: A religious practice!

It is not a religious practice. Although forms of meditation do have their roots in Buddhism and other spiritual practices. It is not limited to a specific type of person or certain religious denomination. Everyone can and should meditate. Whether, your Christian, Muslim, Jewish, or a any other religion you can meditate. In some cases, it will help you become closer with whoever you call God. Or even if your not religious you can meditate! Expanding one's mental processes and expanding happiness are not reserved for one person they are reserved for anyone who wishes to take their hand at meditation.

2. What meditation is not: An escape from reality!

It's not a way to block yourself off from the rest of the world. Instead it cultivates your connection with the rest of the world, and opens doors to your potential to best help humankind. Yes, it sounds a little too good to be true. And being skeptical is a good thing, but once you experience the profound benefits of meditation, there is no turning back. You realize that what everyone has said or told you about meditation is true! Remember meditation is not a way to escape from the troubles in your life. Instead it opens your mind and allows you to see your tribulations with an open mind, leading to more beneficial actions for yourself and the world as a whole.

3. What meditation is not: Simply a relaxation technique!

It is not just a relaxation technique. You may think that meditation is a way of stopping all the thoughts in your mind and experience a period of non-thinking. But, this is just not the case meditation instead allows you to watch your thoughts pass you by and dont have to be engaged and influenced by every trivial thought and emotion. Instead, becoming benevolent to your thought process and living your life more in the present moment. Which leads to greater levels of happiness and life satisfaction. Relaxation is just a byproduct of meditating.

By now I hope you can see the 3 things meditation is not. To review what meditation is not:

1. Meditation is not a religious practice

2. Meditation is not an escape from reality

3. Meditation is not just a relaxation technique

Meditation is practiced by many. With this knowledge in hand you'll be better equipped to fully understand what exactly encompasses meditation, which will lead to more and more meditation success!
