Brain Exercises for Seniors

From all research that I have done, increasing brainpower can increase mental dexterity in seniors. There are ways to keep the mind active and improve the brain. Don't be one of those growing old who lets their brain atrophy.

LEARN A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT

I can play a piano. I've been doing it for years and most of the time I do not have sheet music in front of me. So it's mostly coming from memory and I have the ability to play by ear. I mention this because one of the best exercises for the brain is to learn a musical instrument.

I am teaching seniors to play the piano at my senior center. I'm learning as much from them as they are from me. For instance, reading notes from sheet music and playing those notes is not an easy thing to do. Because I have been doing it for so long it seems easy to me. Also, forming chords with the left hand is very difficult for some. But the learning experience has been so good for my students.

LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE

This is a toughie for me. I've tried Spanish and French. I made a little progress in each, but I never was motivated enough to stick with it. But this is really a great exercise in learning. If you travel abroad, it helps to have a knowledge of the language of the country you are in.

SCRAPBOOKING

This has become very popular lately. There are all kinds of books and tv programs on this subject. Keeping a scrapbook brings memories from the past into our minds. Naturally, you will include mostly happy memories which brightens our mood.

BRAIN GAMES

These are real challenges to jolt the memory and brain. My day cannot officially start until I do the crossword puzzle in the morning paper. Other challenges include sudoku which has become extremely popular recently. Anacrostics, chess and checkers are other examples of ways to keep the brain active.

WORD GAMES

Do you remember the dreaded word problems in math class? They forced you to read and analyze a problem. They still do. Find a book with word games in it and I'll bet you find you are better at it than you were in school, mostly because we think more logically and read more thoroughly than we did when we were younger. There are also board games like Scrabble that are a real challenge to the mind.

How do you exercise you brain? If you don't, you better start. Let me know what you do to keep your mind busy.
