Hot Flash Or Nuclear Blowout

Here I am sitting at my computer, minding my own business, trying to read my emails. Bam! All at once, I am burning up from the inside. My first thought? Am I coming down with something?

No, no illness. Just another sneek attack by my hormones.

Can you relate? Do you have your own story to tell.

Hot flashes affect 75% to 85% of all menopausal women.

I have been having hot flashes for about 8 years now. The first couple years they were sporadic, coming infrequently. I didn't know what was happening at the time. I thought I was sick. I kept waiting for other symptoms to pop up, you know, coughing or sneezing.

At the time , I didn't have a regular doctor, to talk over the symptoms. But as time progressed and the symptoms grew worst, I decided I needed a to have regular check-ups. By now, I am showing other signs of menopause. Heavy menstruation, headaches, mood swings, fatigue, loss of memory, but that is another story.

The bad news is there is no way to stop the symptoms completely. There are several ways to treat hot flashes.

The most common is HRT- Hormone Replacement Therapy, where your doctor will test your hormone levels and prescribe a medication to replace your missing hormones. I didn't go that route because of family medical history. Please discuss this with your doctor. HRT can reduce symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes.

I went with the more natural method using other the counter herbs, which in my own personal opinion helped somewhat, but not a lot.

I used Black cohosh which is suppose to help with hot flashes, it helped a little bit. But it also seemed to cause heavier monthly bleeding. Again this is my experience with it and may or may not effect others the same way.

Always consult your doctor before using over the counter drugs and herbs.

Soy product have a natural estriol, another form of estrogen. Too much soy products may alter a woman's cycle and impact ovulation, which is a disadvantage, but it also builds bone density.

Maca is a root plant found in Peru. It helps increase energy, balance hormones, and balance your mood swings.

Midol, will help with the mood swings and muscle soreness and the other symptoms associated with PMS. I love it.

Try to avoid places that expose you to excess heat, cigarette smoke. Limit the amount of spicy foods and caffeine you use.

Wear lighter material clothing.

Try to get enough sleep, which is funny because another symptom to menopause is restless legs and muscle cramps.

The most important and the hardest to do, is avoid stressful situations.

Exercise daily.

Practice deep breathing exercises.

Above all else stay strong. This will not last forever. My hot flashes started dwindling in the sixth year and have continued to be sporadic. Now in year 8, the hot flashes only come rarely, mostly when stressed out.

And FYI ladies, men also go thru their own form of menopause commonly called Andropause. But where women lose estrogen, men lose testosterone.
