Low Testosterone And the Modern Diet

100 years ago, most people lived on farms and grew their own food. The wars had such a massive effect on 'Big Industry' that by the 50's most people were living in cities and but still sourced foods close to home (mongers, butchers, farmers markets, etc ...) and typically had some type of relationship with where daily food was coming from. By the late 70's, people were beginning to eat out more often and foods processing was beginning to take off, so often when you ate at home it really was not eating at home.

Modern day agricultural practices are nothing like they have ever been in history, not because of technological advances alone, but how things are being done and the long term affects that are beginning to show because of them. Conditions are harsher, seasons are shorter, containments are smaller, but yields across the board are bigger than they have ever been! It does not make sense until one realizes that focus has changed from quality to quantity. The truly sad thing is, most co-ops (places that gather large amounts of food and distributes it from a central source) have fairly rigid standards when it comes to the appearance of the actual product - so not only are we producing more then we ever have, but we are also throwing away more then we ever have.

Once one understands the level of efficiency that is being attained, it's not too big a leap to piece together what's happening. Everything has a set cycle, and no matter how hard you push, those cycles don't change. A field is capable of producing a set amount of 'X', X being whatever the actual commodity is (corn, wheat, livestock, etc ...). Using modern practices, you force 2 or 3 times the amount that the area can comfortably sustain, and sometimes do that twice in a given season depending on the X and if the weather is right. Just by doing this alone, the soil itself will not be able to regenerate and renew itself being ready for the next season. Eventually the soil will go fallow and nothing can be grown there.

Now multiple this situation by a factor of 10 .. or even 20! Healthy, supportive soil with solid nutritive levels aren't a concern because you are going to use the newest fertilizer designed to grow in just about any condition. Then you are going to spray your crops with the newest pesticides/herbicides to keep weeds to a minimum (or inject your livestock with bovine growth hormones and antibiotics). More than likely, the crop you are growing will be a GMO (Genetically Modified Organism) that was designed in a lab to yield higher and is resistant to the poisons used today.

So at this point you might be asking, 'how is this relevant and what does this have to do with testosterone levels?' Well, in a nutshell, testosterone is the thing that makes guys ... well guys. It's what builds and maintains muscles and bones, deepens your voice, grows hair in manly places, maintains your sex drive, etc... If anything affects the production of, or the ability to use your testosterone, all the things we just talked about will go backwards and you do NOT want that happening. Looking at the modern American diet, several red flags jump out:

  1. Processed foods - excessive amounts of preservatives effect the bodies ability to communicate and gives sub par levels of nutrients and trace elements
  2. Typical non-grass fed and finished meats, or field raised situations have antibiotics and bovine growth hormones. The growth hormone used is estrogen (that's the girl hormone!). Once estrogen hits your system, it uses the same receptors as testosterone blocking testosterone's use.
  3. Pesticides and herbicides are hormonal distruptor's so the body can't even call for something that it needs.
  4. GMO's (mostly corn and soy products to date) affect us on levels that we can even imagine yet. Latest studies point to a breakdown in the liver-gallbladder area.

These concerns will lead to things like obesity (at an all time high in the US), type II diabetes, depression, high blood pressure, high cholesterol .. the list goes on and on, and that's without mentioning out biggest, killer heart disease. These conditions are typically treated individually through allopathic means (ie .. prescription drugs). More and more research is showing these symptoms have a deeper root cause - Low Testosterone.

You should focus on eating organically, along with taking a multivitamin that addresses both basic nutrients and trace minerals. And lastly exercise has got to be a part of your daily regiment. Both cardio and resistance training are needed but the most important is you do something.

So it's pretty simple; if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms (and they are insidious, slowly developing over months or even years): infertility, lack of sex drive, fatigue, inability to concentrate, or excessive loss of muscle please contact your wellness physician and get your levels tested.

Nice presentation of facts and updates in today's food. The abundance of processed food and people making poor choices contribute greatly to poor nutrition and low testosterone levels. A good knowledge about the foods we need to eat, as well as, the foods to avoid will certainly help a lot.

I have this thing about buying organic food... How do I know that its really organic? With all the nutritional labeling loopholes allowed in the US, organic could mean that it was grown in a chemical plant...located only 5 miles away from Old MacDonald's farm! I just don't trust that things are what they should be. And with that being said, we have a large garden in our backyard that produces lots of vegetables :)

Fast food? what's that. Oh those places that line every highway in the US. Nice article Wayne. Definitely "food" for thought. Sorry couldn't resist the pun. You have just touched on GMO's but this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed differently than it is currently. These modifications at the very least are killing our niche sensitive insects. Bee's and butterflies come to mind. So who's gonna fertilize the crops when we kill off all the polinators.

I haven't even STARTED on the GMO situation. That is could be the single scariest thing out today. Monsanto has already started playing god and then changed legislation so they didnt have to be accountable for the actions taken. Now, not only are SUPER bugs popping up that can digest them, but research is now showing a direct correlation to certain liver issues. Thanks for the shout out!

Our diets have changed for the worst. Instead of eating from the land we now eat from the box or the can. This is the biggest difference, the process junk we put into our bodies these days is leading to skyrocketing obesity. Unlike 100 years ago, our medical field has improved drastically and we are not keeping people alive to 80 that wouldn't have made it to 50 back then (if they had the same eating habits). No wondering the health care industries are strained!

Obesity is just the start. Some foundational issues that are starting to arise that are truly scary. Lots and lots to write about! Thanks
