Prostate Cancer – A Wonderful Discovery

Prostate Cancer a fear for all men, PSA testing a mere blood test, but the internal, most discomforting. I'm convinced no matter who you are, this test is not one that any man looks forward to. The jokes around it, many and varied, but the reality, an unpleasant feeling.

Woman think men are over sensitive about this fact, and equate it to a visit to the Gynaecologist, sorry Ladies there is no comparison. They, who from their first visit to their woman issue Doctors, become used to being poked and prodded in places where impregnation's performed and birth the result, become used to such examinations. Men find this type examination unnatural.

Having just been for an examination, and just had an article expounding the benefits of regular check ups, I discovered a wonderful answer to the discomfort. Having moved from one city to another, and not as yet visiting a local Doctor, I had to find one that would add me to their patient list. How do you select a new Doctor? By word of mouth, how others have found them, their “bedside” manners and haste. The only person that had any experience with Doctors where we now stay, was my daughter.

Horror, her Doctor is one of a group of four woman Doctors, but she convinced me they were all good Doctors. Never having seen a woman Doctor before, I worried and wondered if it was the right thing to do. How could I discuss men's issues with a woman who I had never met before, and then the thought of her doing an internal examination. In the last 38 odd years the only woman to have seen my derrière was my wife. But over and above that thought, how do you discuss personal things with a woman you've never met before.

Convinced by my wife, that women have to go through this more times than men, and facts as they are, there's not always women Doctors available for them to visit, I had no option. “Must I come with you?” the wife asked, no way, I would rather be alone and try talk my way out of things if possible. The day arrived for my visit, a shower before I went, to make sure all possible areas of examination where in tip-top condition. Who knows what a woman Doctor might want to look at. I remembered my army medical, done by a male Doctor, the drop your draws, grab a handful followed by the instruction to cough. God forbid that this be required.

My apprehension was short-lived, when ushered into her examination room this Doctor wanted to know all about me, not only my health history, but what kept me busy. Never had that bothered a male Doctor before, this was a pleasant change. Wanting to know finally what my problem was and me asking for a simple PSA test, did not get the desired result. No this Doctor wanted to check blood pressure, check the heart and all the other external examinations they do. Soft hands certainly made for a difference, yet I dreaded that word I was expecting.

What did I do while she examined my chest and reactions? Looked at her hands. Why you ask? To see how long her nails might be and how thick her fingers were. Short nails and thin fingers, this was a vast improvement on the gorilla hands of my normal Doctor, his nails are short, but boy has he got thick fingers. Now this was to me the wonderful discovery of the title, I would allow her to do an internal any time. But the most wonderful thing, she would wait for the results of the PSA and if required then I would have to endure.

Men do yourselves a favour, find yourself a woman Doctor, they're far better than the men, they even look prettier, but the important point, the wonderful discovery, their fingers are thinner than men's.

LOL. I love my women doctors - especially at the OBGYN. I even choose the female nurse practitioner over the male doctors - they ask more detailed questions and review the charts more thoroughly. However, I must say that no matter how many times I go to the OBGYN it is by no means a "natural" experience and each time it is an uncomfortable situation - we all hate it. We don't want the doctors "down there" anymore than you guys do!

I can understand that AJ, I think no internal is pleasant, but women seem to go through it far more than men, it was just a epiphany that struck me when I looked at her hands... smaller fingers and a softer touch...

Lol article. Still laughing! I think that maybe women are better for men and men are better for women on this subject. I don't know why but I really do not prefer a woman gynecologist over a man. It feels weird! PSA in only coming through blood test, you should have asked instead of worrying. :-D

The problem was she agreed to just a PSA, but if it was suspect then we were looking at an internal... lucky her fingers are slim and the PSA proved perfect...

Great article Rob, my doctor is now 74 years old and only is in the office a couple of days a week...he has a women doctor with him now for when he actully retires....must admit I have had my reservations about a women doctor, as you were....I have heard that women doctors are more tentitve to your needs than a male doctor....my doctor is plain and to the point....no small talk from him....I like the small finger thing...great observation Rob....so many things they do not know about this disease...PSA from what I read might not be the best test...pending who you talk to....the finger as discomfortable as it is, my understanding is still the standby method....

PSA is a mere indicator, symptoms, fingers etc are all a follow up but the only true way is a biopsy... when one reaches a certain age prostatitis, or BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia) a almost cert, this is not to say one has cancer and a finger test will diagnose BPH or prostatitis, an indicator, PSA . The only diagnostic tool biopsy.

I talked to my doctor on this topic more than once....he told me that most if not all men will have some sort of prostate problem in their life....not to say it is cancer but it is bound to happen...at some point....one day before I go meet my maker....

Rob you have my respect! Linda is right... us women have endured the 'men' doctors for years and, while some are very patient, they aren't near as understanding as the women. It all comes down to that R word you mentioned to McK. It makes all the difference! Your article is wonderful as usual. A little humour and a lot of wisdom... just the most brilliant formulae that I've come to anticipate from our Rob!

Who doesn't loathe having such an examination? Good to see the humor in it. Glad the lady doctor was a good experience for you. I wouldn't enjoy a prostate exam either. Congratulations for your courage. Trust all is well.

All is, or will be, well I'm sure. Just need to have that reassurance of a clear system that comes with age, a needed test... It has to be, I don't know how to write articles about having a disease myself...

What a great disposition you have toward this now. I am very proud of you. Many men would not have taken it that well. I am certain, for a fact, and anything else I can say, about the woman going to a gynecologist. It is worse than what men have to go through. And we are not used to it....ever.....but I ended up laughing when I finished your article because of your good mood you had....you are a good writer Rob and I enjoyed reading this one too.

Thanks Sister this has to go down as a bit of a tongue in cheek article.. I was petrified this morning when I went, but ended feeling, actually quite relaxed and settled to the fact.. naturally my biggest concern was if she had long finger nails, more than the thickness of the finger... but that fact became obvious... anyway I thought it was a wonderful discovery that needed sharing...

Hey, if the prostrate is a concern have you ever tried saw palmetto. It worked for me. The problem with the psa is that it yields so many false positives, The VA system has been moving away from it although it is still up to the doctor's discretion.

Don't really have a problem, but at my age one needs to keep an eye on the possibilities, and a PSA is a good indicator... anything to avoid the dreaded finger... but if it has to happen I've decided a thin woman's finger is the one of choice...
