Anger Associated Anxiety

There is a new study which suggests that the powerful emotion - anger - intensifies anxiety and can result in serious health conditions.

A team of researchers from Concordia University found that anger can exaggerate symptoms of GAD (generalized anxiety disorder), a condition that millions of people suffer from. In this article I will be discussing anger associated anxiety. Both of which are linked, yet the information we have on their interrelation is significantly misunderstood.

GAD is a serious condition, which is characterized by extreme and uncontrollable worry in regard to everyday situations.

This often interferes with a normal every day activities, making it hard to function normally. People who suffer from GAD commonly expect disaster, and are unduly concerned with everyday issues, like health, relationships and money.

In order to see how the specific anger components - physical and verbal abuse, hostility, anger control and expression - favor GAD, the researchers assessed over 380 participants for the symptoms of GAD and their inclination to respond to scenarios that induced anger.

The team assessed individuals response to phrases such as, “I lash out at when I get infuriated” and “I'm mad inside, but I don’t express it.”

This research showed that in the 131 people who exhibited symptoms of GAD, higher levels of anger and its other factors were linked with anxiety and worry.

Furthermore, internalized anger and hostility contributed to how severe their GAD symptoms were.

Experts suggests that anxiety and anger go hand in hand, and that higher levels of anger are uniquely connected to GAD status.

The expression of anger, internally — boiling inside without expressing it — is a more solid indicator of GAD than other forms of anger.

Researchers believe that an explanation for the association of anxiety and anger link is that, when a situation can have a good or bad outcome, individuals who are anxious tend to think the worst.

This can result in high anxiety levels. Evidence also suggests there is a similar thought process in people who are easily angered. That being said, anger and GAD and anger may be two indications of the same one-sided thinking process.

In order to effectively treat anxiety, anger needs to be addressed first, so as not to get in the way of the treatment for anxiety, which usually involves cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).

By understanding the role anger has in regard to GAD, treatment can be improved for those suffering from this disorder.

Great article Kylie... I must admit that I tend to hold anger inside without expressing it, perhaps because I see it as more "polite..."

It can be more polite. I guess it's also a matter of choosing what you get angry about and to what extent.
