Doctors and even most parents are quick to medicate children with inattention and hyperactivity. The instant gratification of a child taking a pill that makes them behave better may be tempting now, but the long-term benefits of behavioral therapy as treatment for ADHD in children has proven to attack attention deficit at the source and not just supress the symptoms. Keep reading to learn how behavioral therapy could be just what your child needs.

Most parents never even look seriously into behavior therapy. what usually happens is that medications relieve a few of the symptoms (enough to make life bearable) so mom and dad stay content with those results. The positive effects of this treatment for ADHD in children is temporary and the negative effects can be permanent and serious.

The problem is that medications do not cure your child of anything. They relieve symptoms, but the effects are completely temporary. As soon as the medication is discontinued the symptoms will come back and possibly more severe than before. Children can become dependent on these substances to function and could experience unpleasant side effects as well.

Behavioral therapy exposes the behaviors and negative thought patterns that make attention deficit more severe in order to replace them with more positive alternatives. In most cases children are just blindly reacting on impulse. When their impulse reaction is positive rather than negative it becomes easier and easier to focus, calm down and have more appropriate reactions.

A professional therapist can be expensive, but in relation to the money saved on prescription medications its a small price to pay. The effects of therapy are permanent as the child learns techniques that he can call upon to focus and calm down whenever the need arises. This is a safe and proven treatment for ADHD in children that does work.

Behavioral therapy can only work as long as you, the parent are on board as well. It will be up to you to not only demonstrate the positive actions that you would like to see out of your child, but be patient and above all else supportive. The success of any treament for children with ADHD depends on your love and undying support for your child.

Behaviors are engraved in our memory and automatic responses so this could take a few weeks before you see results. However the effects are long term and beneficial. A child that is kept on medication alone will need therapy in the future anyway.

As I stated earlier meds cure you of nothing and will not make a mental affliction like ADHD go away on its own. If you need keep your child on a light dose of medication to help in between therapy sessions that will work as well.

As therapy progresses and they become mentally equipped to handle attention deficit it will become easier to wean them off the pills for good. This combination of meds and therapy has been a very successful treatment for ADHD in children because it deals with the day to day symptoms and the neurological issues as well.
