Attention Deficit Disorder In Adults – Looking For Better Ways To Treat Them

The oil slick is growing larger! I say that because the latest Medco report shows that attention deficit disorder in adults, especially in women, seems to be growing at an exponential rate! In the last ten years, the number of women who are taking psychostimulants has jumped by 264%!

Now this may suggest a whopping increase in adult ADD but it is more likely because of the following factors:-

• young women were not diagnosed when they were children

• they were mostly suffering from ADD and the hyperactivity element was absent

• this means that they went unnoticed in the classroom and at home and were never properly diagnosed.

So now these women are mainly on psychostimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall and they may be able to manage their symptoms better. They may find that they are able to focus better and stay on task and manage to meet a deadline. It is probably because of the missed deadlines that they first sought diagnosis and treatment because they were having enormous problems in meeting the demands of their job. Or they may have been at college and not being able to keep up or even pass their exams.

But when an adult starts to take psychostimulants it often backfires because many of them just cannot put up with the side effects and they may actually hinder them in their jobs and their relationships. These effects could include dizziness, numbness, abdominal pain, angina. headaches, feeling lethargic, anxiety, blood pressure oscillations and appetite loss.

This is why attention deficit disorder in adults needs to be looked at in a broader light and see how it can actually be managed without medication. Medication should be the last option when everything else has failed.

We should consider the following strategies before going down the medication route:-

• if you need help with time management, you should try and think what IS the problem and what are the things that you just cannot manage. How can you get help? Lists and time logs can help here. If these fail, try behavioral therapy or counselling or even get a life coach. The latter could pinpoint where your greatest weakness is and identify a solution which suits you. You can learn strategies to cope with multi tasking and also learn to not over commit yourself and be able to cope with deadlines.

• if your problems are in your relationship, you could gently ask what are the things which make you not so lovable, attractive or appealing to your partner. You might discover a few surprises and you may be unaware of the mistakes that you constantly make and which you probably blame on others.

• have you investigated all the gadgets you could be using in the office and at home and all the apps that you could have on your iPhone so that you do not forget anything? Forgetting and distraction are less of a problem in attention deficit disorder in adults,thanks to the Internet and electronic media.

• just by organising and getting better at it could help you to start to manage your ADHD and not resort to medication.

Attention deficit disorder in adults is often overlooked and so are the alternative options which could really help you to stay on task at home and at work.

You are so right. Many little girls are overlooked and grow up thinking something is wrong with them. Many wonder why they cannot fit in with other little girls at tea parties and such. The problem definitely increases with age and the demands of jobs, paying bill, family and home. I love your article.
