Do Sad Lights Work?

Do Sad Lights Really Work Or Are They A Myth?

This is the question I had when I first heard about a SAD light. After all how can a 'sad' light make you happy ;)

First of all let's see what SAD stands for. I looked it up and got "Seasonal Affective Disorder", which basically means that when the sun goes in your mind gets the winter blues. That is of course if you are actually affected with Seasonal Affective Disorder. Which I am by the way, just didn't know that it was an official condition. In fact I might have to call in to work tomorrow and tell them that I have SAD disorder and can't come in!

All jokes aside, it is not pleasant at all to be affected by this disorder. It mimics depression symptoms and can leave you feeling moody, lethargic and lacking any kind of motivation to do anything.

But rest assured there is definitely a great solution - A special lamp that produces positive energy like the sun but without the harmful UV rays which it filters out. Although if given the choice I'd rather be lying on a beach in the Caribbean everyday for a few hours reading a book instead of sitting under my SAD lamp looking at my computer, the truth is it really does work. I felt better after about a week of using my lamp for just under an hour a day.

The great thing about these lights is that you can actually get other stuff done and just have the lamp turned on as a desk light (or where ever you may be), without really thinking about it. They are usually small and transportable making them a snitch to carry from room to room. But really I think the absolute best thing about them are the fast results. I was definitely skeptical at first but because I really suffer during the winter months I gave it a try. And I wasn't disappointed. Apparently it works because your body absorbs this special light and then consequently goes on to release trapped hormones in your brain which leads to you feeling good again.

So all in all I'm really happy that I got one of these and yes these SAD lamps do work. I'll be using it during the winter months. That is of course until I'm rich enough to go spend a few months on a dessert island every year with a hammock and Pina Colada in hand!

Hi Hannah, nice article and great subject. I've been thinking of getting one of these lamps for a while now. It would be great to have here at the computer and when I'm sitting drawing too. I visited your website, it's beautiful and full of informative stuff. Thanks for the reminder about this. Rob:)

Hi Rob, glad you liked the article and my website. If you have any suggestions on what topics you'd like to learn about just let me know! Those lights really are great. I've heard great feedback from them. Where I live the winter isn't that long, but I still think I'm going to get one because I still get those winter blues!
