Imagine that sounds, sights and smells are overwhelming your brain and you have no way of filtering out the unwanted ones. If you are interested in helping children with ADHD, this is just one of the many aspects that we have to be aware of. We have to have some idea of what is going on in that brain. Let us not exaggerate but the following areas are merely faulty :-
• child cannot concentrate
• distracted –partly due to sensory overload but also due to poor attention span
• cannot sit still
• needs secondary movement in to be able to concentrate, so wriggling around on a stability ball actually helps
• is impulsive because again the brain functions of being aware of consequences and thinking ahead are faulty.
So how can we help? There are lots of little ways that we can assist the child in the daily struggle with coping at home and especially at school. But first we need to be sure that we are on the right path as regards the treatment options we have chosen. All the medical authorities tell us that behavior modification must come first.
It is this training which will equip our child with coping and life skills and will be instrumental in him growing up to be a well balanced adult. If this works, then the signs of ADHD will be hardly noticeable and he will be more than capable in the workplace and in getting on with his peers and colleagues.
Have you noticed that we have not mentioned meds at all, so far? That is so important because they can only be useful in alleviating some symptoms. They are just not the long term solution that we need as they fall short of teaching skills, have nasty side effects and their effects tend to wear off after about three years. They do not treat or cure the condition and in many ways just mask the symptoms.
So, if we are intent on helping children with ADHD, we really have to get the following in place so that progress can be made :-
• we spend prime time with the children when they are doing their favorite things whether it be sport or even a favourite game etc. The empathy and relaxed atmosphere is great for bonding.
• we are sure that they have plenty of green time in the open as children have demonstrated that they are much less hyper and more attentive after such activities
• we have the behavior issues under control. Good behavior is praised and bad behavior is followed by relevant consequences. All this has been explained to the child.
• we have reduced drastically processed foods as these will not provide the vital nutrients for the brain neurons to function. So we are giving pride of place to lean meats, protein, fruits and vegetables.
These then are some of the ways of helping children with ADHD. But we may still want to replace the medication with something gentler and which will restore the lost balance in the body mind equation. One of the best ways is to use ADHD homeopathic remedies. Why not learn more about these?
Yes, we have a problem in that medication is seen all too often as teh be all and end all! Thanks for stopping by Heather.
This all makes good sense to me. How often do people plug medication that merely mask symptoms despite side effects. Easier is often not better. Thanks for the article Robert.
