How To Spot A Bad Therapist

Just as good therapists will help you understand yourself a lot more than you did, and open your eyes to some of the things you might have been doing wrong, there are bad therapists who'll complicate everything even more, and a relationship with them can turn into intentional or unintentional manipulation.

You should look at yourself after a session and see how you feel, analyze what has change, and is that change for the better or for the worse. There are several ways to spot a therapist who isn't working with you the right way, or even exploiting you, so you should be able to see the indication for that.

How will you recognize persons or therapists who are intentionally or unintentionally manipulating with you?

  • They'll put their expertise and experience in the first plan and point it out often (the misuse of power from acting with a title and experience)
  • They'll give you advices and convince you that it's something that's best for you (the misuse of acting with knowledge and experience)
  • They'll often remind you of your obligations and duties, sometimes towards them (intellectual blackmail)
  • They'll decrease your self-confidence by creating a feeling of guilt in case you haven't done something or fulfilled something, sometimes for them (emotional blackmail)
  • They'll create an addictive relationship through instructions that you'll have to consult with them and be in a permament contact (intellectual and emotional blackmail)
  • They'll take away your freedom of choice and behaviour, by telling you he'll take the responsibility for you (spiritual blackmail)
  • He'll compare you with other persons and by that decrease your self-confidence (psychological manipulation)
  • He'll support you in your projections or illusions (psychological manipulation)
  • He'll often refer to spiritual authorities, use them or tell you he gets the information from 'them' (spiritual blackmail)

Reasons of such manipulations can vary; unadequate education, complex of higher value, weak and bad character, need for self-prooving, taking over of control and power. All of the above can tell that the therapist is trapped in ego (negatively aspected) and that what he's doing is succumbed to empowering of his value, and isn't directed towards benefit of the client. Such persons often call themselves spiritual teachers, gurus and they build a cult of personality.

But often such persons shouldn't be blamed, because persons that incline to that kind of therapists make them be exactly that. Some persons need a leadership, they even wait for someone who'll lead them. Perhaps such experience is necessary for them to find themselves, or perhaps they want to run away from themselves further more. Either shouldn't be blamed, because everyone's got their own path and freedom to choose it.

What's important is understanding that we're free to make decisions, to choose whatever we believe is best for us. If you find yourself in a relationship with a person or therapist and you see or sense it's not going where it should be going, or simply, that there's something wrong, look for a good therapist, someone who'll fit you better.
