In parenting ADHD children, it is very useful to get opinions and advice from the experts. That was why I was very interested to hear what Dr. Michael Manos had to say on this very difficult subject. Dr. Manos is not only Head of the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic but has also contributed to numerous articles and research on ADHD and child behavior in general.
The first fact he points out is that about 60% of children with ADHD are liable to carry it into adulthood. The secret of successful treatment is not in medicating these children but in giving them the life skills they need so that they can manage the condition better in adolescence. That will give them a much better chance of coping well in adulthood in dealing with relationships and in flourishing in the workplace. It is how well we deal with parenting ADHD children that will in many ways determine whether our children will be successful or not. Yes, it is that important!
One great way to help ADHD kids is to help them manage their time. You have to set up an ADHD friendly home where there is a very well structured and organised routine which runs smoothly. That will be a great help in organizing time and when there are set routines, that can be an enormous advantage.
The times for bedtime, getting up and mealtimes are all as regular as clockwork. The use of timers and post its can be a great help as well.
Once kids are older, they can take advantage of the enormous range of apps for mobiles and computers which can really help them in keeping track of appointments, tasks, and chores. These new gadgets help teens to manage time, organise their to do lists and can increase productivity, if applied correctly. As many kids are so addicted to mobile phones, this is a great way for them to show what they can really do with a little help from their electronic friends.
Dr. Manos favors the multi pronged approach in parenting ADHD children. This will make full use of behavioral therapy and may use medication if necessary. There are however alternatives to medication which you can find out about in my website. These will include herbal remedies but more importantly the homeopathic range of remedies which are now gaining in popularity as there are no side effects and no health risks either.
Parenting ADHD children has never been easier. This is certainly worth checking out because you really want to give your child the best possible chance in life.
Thanks for the encouraging comments Becky. It is so true that medication is seen as the only way to solve the problem and parents are missing golden opportunities.
Compelling article, Robert. Thank you for pointing out the natural ways to raise a child with ADHD. Medications are rarely the LONG-TERM solution to this problem. Your information about time-management was exceptional. Thanks for sharing.
