Changing Attitudes Towards Our Military

Support for our military has changed drastically since the Vietnam War. Our modern day warriors are looked up to, unlike our Vietnam veterans who returned to a very hostile America. Our Vietnam vets were called "baby killers" and were told to get out of Vietnam. Protest songs like "Four Dead in Ohio" and "Eve of Destruction" were the order of the day. America was in turmoil back in the 60's and early 70's.

Today, it's a whole different story. Today, our men and women in the military are looked upon as heroes. 9/11 has had a profone affect on America and it's people. We no longer look upon our military with disdain. 9/11 has brought this country together. As horrible as 9/11 was, there was a silver lining. America is reunified. Today, Americans support our military. You see those magnetic rubber signs saying "Support Our Troops" on cars.

I'm sure many of us know someone in the military, someone who is presently risking their lives in the Middle East or has in the past. Some of us have known someone in the military who has made the ultimate sacrifice.

The difference between our modern day military and the Vietnam Era military is that today our military is made up of volunteers. The Vietnam Vets were drafted.

I personally know someone in the Army. Her name is Sarah. She is 20 years old and her unit was just deployed to Afghanistan for a year. Her unit was previously stationed at Schofield Barracks here in Hawaii. Before Sarah left I told her that I was very proud to know her and that I commend her for what she was about to do for her country. Her unit left three weeks ago.

Sarah is young with her whole life ahead of her, yet she is willing to risk life and limb to serve her country. This tells me how much Sarah loves her country. That she is willing to risk it all for this great nation of ours. How many of us are willing to risk it all and do what Sarah and others in the military are doing? I'm proud to say that I know Sarah. What she is doing takes a great deal of courage and sacrifice. She'll be away from friends and family. She'll be missing the special occasions and holidays.

One of Sarah's favorite pasttimes is body boarding at Waikiki Beach. I saw Sarah every day at that beach for two weeks prior to her deployment for Afghanistan.

So "Support Our Troops".

Street Talk

Drafted or not I don't think vets get enough credit for their bravery. Yes people like Sarah and myself volunteered for this job but it is not who you are but what you do that defines you. Many of the Vietnam vets have done more for this country then any of us ever will. Either way thanks to Sarah and good article!
